Prenatal Massage

Anyone else had one yet this pregnancy or during a previous pregnancy? It was all I could think to help my back yesterday and a coworker (personal trainer - I work at YMCA) gave me a look like "why would you do that?!" when I said I got one yesterday.

Annnnd because I'm a worrier he has me freaked. I'm not high risk. I had it ok'd by my former OB (switched since, but nothing's changed.) I thought they were supposed to be beneficial? It's been more than 24 hours since so I'm assuming I'd know if it did anything negative, but still. I wish people would hold their judgment.

End rant.

Re: Prenatal Massage

  • "Why would you do that?" Ummmmm because it feels good? Why do people ever get massages?

It's called a prenatal massage, so obviously it is safe for pregnant women. It sounds like your coworker is just an ass.

I haven't had one yet but I'm itching to schedule one soon.

  • I got one every four weeks
  • Thanks, @ellajune2012. Of course I googled it and all sorts of fun stuff about preterm labor, etc. comes up. Good grief. I wish people would just shut their mouths sometimes.

I felt amazing after, slept like a baby and my back doesn't hurt today. I call that a win.

  • I have a massage place I've been going to about once a month for years. They wouldn't let me go until I was 13 weeks but I've been 3 times since then and everything has been fine

  • I had one and it felt amazing. I had to have a note from my doctor before the spa I went to would give me one, but my doctor didn't even bat an eye when I asked about it. That was over a week ago and I've had no issues from it.
  • I had several last pregnancy, andwill be starting to get some soon hopefully for this one.  IT was awesome.  The first time I'd had a massage actually.  It made my aching hips and back so much better, I didn't know a one hour rub could do that.

    So I'd definitely recommend it.

Just make sure you are getting it from someone actually trained in pre-natal massage.

  • As long as your OB okays it I would think it would be fine. I had one this past weekend and it was amazing. I then had my ultrasound and everything looked great. So I say go for it!

  • I've felt baby squirm/kick since then, so I guess my coworker mostly has me worried about long term effects he thinks he knows about. I seriously felt amazing afterward - I'm sure my husband was just as thankful I got the massage ;)

  • I've never heard of a prenatal massage being dangerous.

  • Neither had I. Just a case of someone who doesn't know anything and should have kept their mouth shut ...

  • I've been having back spasms on my left shoulder and I contacted my OB office and they told me to massage area and apply heat. Well Friday night I could stand no more and went to get a prenatal massage and she was great. She massaged my back and legs and I felt great. I'm thinking of doing it again this weekend.  ;)

  • I'm so glad you feel better, @zartisterica! I couldn't believe how drastically my back improved after just one hour. I could barely walk in, and I walked out with very little pain, more like tenderness.

  • I get them regularly and even when I was having heavy bleeding issues my dr said and I quote 'they aren't massaging your uterus....as long as it stays that way, it is completely fine!'
  • My husband just got me a gift certificate for a prenatal massage!! I have never had one before, do you strip down to your undies? Do you lay on your belly the whole time?
  • This is making me want to try one again. I tried a one hour during my first pregnancy and made it barely 20 minutes in before I was too uncomfortable and left. Maybe I need to find a better place.
  • I think you're fine! :) The salon I used to work at offered special prenatal massages for women after they were past 1st trimester.  They're actually very beneficial!

  • My mom is a massage therapist; there is a spot up near the shoulder that can induce labor, but a trained professional would know to stay away from there.  And to those who were wondering, you won't lay on your stomach but rather on your side, and most places will have you go down to your underwear but keep you strategically covered with a sheet as they move you around on the table.

  • I had one the other day. I've been going regularly for massages once a month and I'm not going to stop now. Plus I love the pregnancy pillow they have with the belly cutout - makes laying face down comfortable again!

I just got one on Sunday. I even lay down on my stomach.

  • I get a massage every two weeks. The past two times she hasn't allowed me to lay on my stomach...don't think it would be comfy anyway. So I lay on my side for her to access my back and hips and neck. Worth every penny!!
