C-sections

those who had repeat, planned c/s...

...were you happy with your choice? I am struggling with the decision (vbac vs repeat c/s) but I am finding that I am leaning towards a repeat c/s. My labor the first time around was horrible and after almost 3 days it ended with an emergency c-section. I have to say the c/s was much easier then I anticipated and my recovery was not bad. I am reading the risks for both, but I find myself wanting the c/s b/c I know what to expect and it was just so much easier. My son has speech problems and, while we will never know 100%, there is a theory that the difficult labor might have contributed to it. I guess I am just scared of the though of labor going bad again. My doc is amazing and will not pressure me one way or another. He thinks I should follow my gut and do what I am comfortable with. I just wanted to hear from other moms who opted for the c/s the second time if you were happy with your choice.

I didn't have a choice as my hospital does not offer VBAC. Even so, I don't think I would have tried it. My recoveries have been very easy and I really believe I would have ended up with c/s again anyway. I think vbacs are great for many but just not right for me.

Edited to add that if we wanted more than 3, I may have been more inclined to try for VBAC just b/c I knew I didn't want more than 3 c/s.

  • I just scheduled mine. With DD I was about 5 days past due date and sent to hospital to be induced bc of low fluids. After 20 hours and cervadil and pitocin I didn't get past 3 cms. Has emergency section. I have choice this time around but if I don't go into labor by due date I will be scheduled for a section. So to avoid waiting another 5 days after due date we are scheduled 2 days before due date.
  • My doc broke it down for me like this: with RCS there are higher risks of complications however most are not life threatening. With VBAC, risks of complication as compared to RCS are low, however if you have a complication it is usually serious and possibly even life threatening. He does both and wasn't trying to sway me one way or the other. I chose RCS and would do a third one too if we end up with a third pregnancy.

  • It wasn't offered to me but I'm happy I had a rcs. My recovery was great. I knew exactly what to expect and so did dh. I also didn't have problems with taking care of DS. I just couldn't pick him up for 2 weeks since he was like 30+ lbs. It was also nice to schedule it and have an idea exactly when you might have your baby. Of course there is a chance you might go into labor on your own.
Overall I'm very happy with my decision. Rcs was definitely for me! Good luck!!

  • I had a cs for a breech baby with the first. With the second I honestly knew very little about VBAC and I don't think my hospital was doing them. I'm having number 3 any day now and going with the cs again. I never felt bad about my choice.
  • I had a hard labor with my first child, though nowhere near as difficult as yours, and a really easy c/s recovery, so that definitely swayed me toward an RCS.  I never felt strongly about having the experience of a vaginal birth, and I sort of expected to go past my EDD with DS as I did with DD, and since I had GD with my second pregnancy and absolutely didn't want to be induced (I don't think I would have had the option anyway), I figured I would probably end up with an RCS even if I wanted to try for a VBAC.  As it turned out, I went into labor spontaneously with DS before my scheduled RCS, and I think with the way he was positioned and his smaller head at birth compared to DD, I probably could have birthed him vaginally, but my second c/s also went well and I have no regrets about it; it was actually a great experience compared to the stress and chaos of my first c/s.  My OB practice was fine with either choice; I was just advised that a VBAC would be preferable if I intended to have a large family, but I think we're done, and if not I would feel comfortable with one more c/s.

  • Thank you all for your opinions!
I was also told by my doc the risks and it sounded like the vbac risks, though low, were more serious then the rcs.
DH and I have always wanted 2 kids, 3 would be our limit so this wouldn't affect our choice to have more kids.
I feel more and more comfortable with the choice to do a rcs. Like some of you said, the idea of having the date set and to just walk in and have everything in order sounds so nice, especially after the headache that was my first experience. My mom supports my choice, my MIL not so much but she isn't being mean about it. She just feels natural is the best way, and in a way it is, but it isn't without its share of risks.
My gut is telling my c-section, I think I should probably just follow it and not force something I am really not for. Hopefully this time, since its planned, I will be able to BF my baby quicker then the last time (I was left in recovery for 3hrs, they forgot me during a shift change and never gave me a call button...I was in some corner room with no windows and no one to call....I was so mad)
Thanks again for sharing your experiences!!!

  • I'm having a repeat c section and I love the fact that its scheduled and stress free.. Unless this baby tries coming early ;)
  • Yes, the day of the repeat was calm. The procedure went fine. Because I didn't labor, I felt my recovery was better right away, didn't feel like I was living through war. I felt more rested from the get go. I do not regret it, and I will have no regrets for this third C section.
  • I am also doing a repeat c section. Been through the recovery and know what to expect

I was i was back and forth. All said and done it was a great experience over all so I don't regret it.

That said my main motivation for a vbac was recovery since I had a hard time with my first. It wasn't nearly as hard second time.

If your motivation is more for a different birth experience then a vbac might be more attractive.

  • I had a CS after two failed inductions and failure to progress. I will be scheduling a CS for this pregnancy. I had a good experience and a fairly easy recovery - a lot easier than many women I know who had vaginal births. And to be honest, I generally have no interest in a natural birth. It's a really easy choice for me.

  • I have a c/s scheduled but if I go into labor beforehand we will see what the circumstances are for either VBAC or C/S. I feel like the c/s is the known entity for me, so less nerves there, and my main concern with c/a isbtbe recovery after with my DS at home and not wanting to nag my DH with "hello - I can't do that, you need too..." But I guess that is his job after c/s...
