tip daycare for holidays?

DS is our first so this is our first holiday season with a babysitter and daycare. Is it customary and/or appropriate to tip at the holidays or buy gifts? If so, how much $ is appropriate to tip (1 week's cost of daycare)? 5 women work at his daycare so that would come out to $50/pp. Any experience with this or advice?

    That's exactly what I did last year (for the same number of people, too). I got them gifts but cash or a gift card in a card would probably work just as well. My people do a good job and love my son so I was happy to do holiday gifts!

    Most parents do give something to the teachers and floaters, and both daycares I've been in sent out notices about taking up a collection so you could wait to see if you get something like that.

    The amount people give varies. I tend to think that whatever you give, give it as a gift card (i.e. cash) because that's what people really want around the holidays. At my (corporate) job, I get a holiday bonus in cash and would not be happy with a candle, scarf or plate of cookies.

    A week's cost?! We have an in-home provider and it's $250/wk so I have to give her $250? Holy crap. I was thinking like $50. Am I crazy?

    They do a collection for his teachers and assistants so they pretty much tell us how much to contribute.

    Nanny gets week off with pay and another week's pay.

    Thanks ladies! As a teacher, I know how much cash/gift cards are appreciated vs. items so we'll stick to that!

    My dc center specifically discourages gifts that are beyond a small token of appreciation so we give cards, cookies, etc.

    DS goes to a center so we usually buy gift cards to Starbucks for about $20 for each teacher.
