~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog.

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. Have you had any supply issues while on the MSPI diet?

3. Any new snacks, recipes, or other resources you'd like to share?

4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Good and good. Gave DS a little goats milk this weekend, and he liked it, he even said, "Mmm!". :) He seemed to get a little constipated but I've heard that's pretty common with WCM too, so hopefully it's not a long term issue. We'll get the allergy tests done on Friday.

    2. Have you had any supply issues while on the MSPI diet? Luckily, I've never had any supply issues.

    3. Any new snacks, recipes, or other resources you'd like to share? I experimented with a combo zucchini/pumpkin bread this weekend and it was yummy! I'll post the recipe later tonight when I get home.

    4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I am just really craving ice cream lately... I'm thinking I may indulge soon. The question is, should I let DS try it first, and make sure he's ok, before I eat some? I'm probably being overly cautious, but so far we've only given him cow cheese, yogurt, butter, and goats milk. I definitely won't be giving him ice cream regularly so this would be a purely selfish endeavor!

  • @DC2London Oh, I know about the coconut ice cream! I have had it and it's delish. But, whenever I ate it DS got bad diaper rash and I got plugged ducts. :( So no more for me.

Did you see my update last week about our visit to the allergist? She opted to order blood tests rather than scratch tests because his skin flares up so easily. That might be a good route for your DS2 also.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? my LO is doing great! Happy & healthy, gaining weight, etc. Her diaper haven't had blood in about two weeks but her stools are still not normal... The color, smell, moucus, froth, and texture have all gotten worse with my diet. I am ver discouraged & really starting to question everything and want to be able to just eat whatever I want again since this doesn't seem to be helping. (I have been dairy free, soy free, nut free, & egg free for almost 7 weeks).

    2. Have you had any supply issues while on the MSPI diet? None per say.... I have OS/OALD so I have really been working on that too since it could be a cause.... My supply has dropped but hard to say the cause.

    3. Any new snacks, recipes, or other resources you'd like to share?
No :( I eat the same meal everyday :(

    4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I have been avoiding all soy but some nutrition charts don't consider soy bean oil as soy.... Does that mean it is okay to eat products with soy bean oil?

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We are both doing well. 2. Have you had any supply issues while on the MSPI diet? No 3. Any new snacks, recipes, or other resources you'd like to share? I've been eating a lot of the same things but recently found that Duncan Hines makes dairy free brownie mix and a dairy free blueberry mix. It was a nice treat! 4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I've seen two different specialists about LOs MSPI. One said that the only thing I need to cut out of my diet is dairy and that soy has nothing to do with it. He also said I could reintroduce dairy in a few months. The other told me to cut dairy and soy (only soy protein) and do not try to introduce until LO is a year. I'm taking the advice of the second doctor but am wondering if anyone else was told the same thing about not needing to cut soy?
  • @DC2London thank you!  eek sorry about your LO... crazy that such a small thing could cause such a reaction!

  • @AnnP84 When we first saw the pedi she suggested cutting out only dairy. When he was still having symptoms she suggested I then cut out soy. She said most kids outgrow MSPI around 1 yr old so she didn't suggest reintroducing anything before then. I have heard from some other MSPI mamas that their LOs were able to tolerate dairy before 1 yr, though. As for only cutting soy protein, for some kids that is sufficient, but as you can see from DC2London's experience, some kids are much more sensitive and can't be exposed to any soy. FWIW I avoid all soy as my DS also seems very sensitive.
  • 1. We are doing alright. DS has been Vomitting more, but that might be more reflux related... So we are going to switch from Zantac to Prevacid and see if that helps.
DH tries to help -- so he got the frozen milk for me... And he got the kind from before I was dairy / soy free.. So we got our rashy, upset baby back for a few days. He seems to be feeling better but he still has his rash. And I ate a small bit of an indulgence with butter! (Oops)

    2. No supply issues, actually had to fix an oversupply.

    3. We made a delicious turkey chili with peanut butter and cocoa. Yumm

I don't cook with soybean oil, but it's used in most restuarants, so i let it slide when we eat out. Which isn't too often.

    4. DS is a happy spitter, but his nose is always congested... Should I try and eliminate more (eggs and peanut butter) are major staples in my diet. Or since he seems pretty good just go with it.

  • @YellowLily2013 My DS was congested until I cut out dairy. I'm not sure if it would be worth it for you to cut more from your diet (although I have found it pretty easy to avoid peanuts), if it doesn't seem to bother him.
  • Here's the recipe I promised. I call it:
Super Squash Bread (free of top 8 allergens, and oil-free too!)
    2 Tbs water
1 c pumpkin (I prefer to roast my own but I'm sure canned would be fine)
    1 c grated zucchini and/or crookneck squash
    1 c sugar
    1/2 tsp vanilla
1 flax egg (1 Tbs flax meal + 3 Tbs water, let sit a few minutes)
    Combine the above ingredients.
    2 c barley flour (I use Bob's Red Mill)
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/4 tsp nutmeg
    1/8 tsp cloves
    1/8 tsp ginger
    1 tsp baking soda
    3/4 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
Combine the remaining ingredients, add to wet and mix until just combined.
Pour into greased (I just use olive oil) loaf pan.
Bake in 350 oven for 50-60 minutes.
Enjoy! This is great for breakfast, and a sneaky way to get your toddler to eat more veggies. :)
  • @rocknrollfriend that recipe looks yummy!! I need to eat more veggies (and just more in general)!

I think I'll hold off on eliminating anything else since he's pretty content most of the time. Thanks for that reassurance. :)

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? LO is finally starting to gain weight.

    2. Have you had any supply issues while on the MSPI diet? I had a noticeable supply dip last weekend but it's back to "normal" again.

    3. Any new snacks, recipes, or other resources you'd like to share?

    4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? DS2 has had reactions to apples and pears as well, so this morning as I'm nursing him and noticing his arms and face are red in spots; then it hit me, I probably shouldn't have been having apple cider yesterday/today.

BTW, with the holidays coming up, what is everyone doing for their eggnog fix?
