trick or treating?

Our local radio station had a talk this morning about how old was too old to trick or treat. It got me thinking...

How old is too old?
How young is too young?

I personally would hand out candy to anybody willing to actually dress up, in costume, and knocked on my door and said trick or treat!

  • Everyone gets candy that comes to our door. I would rather high school kids trick or treat than vandalize houses or party and drink. But I might give them a hard time for not wearing a costume :-)
This. I give everyone a piece of candy.. and I always have a lot left over. I think it is bad taste to come up to a door without a costume though.. but I won't deny anyone candy. =)

  • The older kids (teens) - especially the ones not dressed up at all - that come to my door definitely get the tootsie rolls.  The younger kids get the reese's and butterfingers :)

  • If older kids are wearing costumes,I don't have a problem with it...
No idea about too young -- when I was a kid, my parents were always with me, so it didn't really matter how young I was.

  • Agree with PP...if they come to the door they get candy. I'm e en taking LO trick or treating...not to get candy but bc the neighbors would love to see her in her costume;)

Yes I agree with this, although I wouldn't give candy unless they were dressed up. I trick or treated into high school, and even though I sort of knew that I was maybe getting too old for it, come on... trick or treating is fun! You look forward to it every year! It's hard to give up! And there's much worse things kids could be doing.

As for too young, our babies are too young to trick or treat for actual candy IMO. Once they are old enough to actually walk, say "trick or treat," and eat candy, then they're good to go. We will dress Rhys up and walk around with the neighborhood parents and kids this year for a little bit, just to show off his costume, but we aren't going to collect candy for him... he clearly can't eat it yet!

  • My mom was too freaked out about getting candy from strangers. I got dressed up and handed out the candy.
LO is too small to trick or treat but we might go to a few neighbors with my friends older two boys. No candy for her.
As far as teens if they are taking younger ones or dressed up then they get candy no questions asked but no costume I'll give them a hard time but they will still get candy from me but not DH.

  • If the baby is too young for candy I have no problem with them going around the neighborhood showing off their costume cuteness. I don't think they should be collecting candy though. I think as long as an older kid is wearing a costume I'm fine with them trick or treating at any age. I feel a little bad for teens- too old to trick or treat but too young to dress up and go to a bar. I guess schools have parties or kid's parents... I am so out of the teen loop.

  • I have encountered several much taller than me trick or treaters in scream masks that don't say anything. It makes me nervous and I really don't like it. I give them candy though.

I plan on taking T to a couple houses that we know. Of course he can't have any candy. We might walk around the neighborhood to see everyone.

  • I think if you're willing to dress up, you're not too old to go. I have been trick or treating every single year. Even the year I was pregnant. I know once I got to be high school age, a lot of people actually wanted me to sing, tell jokes, etc in order to get candy, even though I was dressed up. It's all in fun. I took DD her first year, but just to family's homes and a few neighbors. This year DS will be going, since we are taking DD. All 4 of us are Wizard of Oz characters.

Ill side eye you TOT with a baby in a stroller. I will. But I'll give you candy.
As will I. If you're just showing off a dressed up LO, I'm cool with that, but if you have a bag and are collecting candy on "behalf" of a baby, then you're getting the side eye from me.
