Early Riser

Ladies, I need some help! DS has become quite the early riser since we moved to 2 naps. I'm talking 5:30, if not earlier. I'm debating between trying to push his bedtime back (it's 6:30 now) or just focusing on the naps (many days these are both under an hour). Any suggestions? Is anyone else dealing with this? I've been sort of rolling with it, but 5:30 is certainly not MY ideal wake up time - and the time change is only two weeks away! 4:30 is simply unthinkable!

Re: Early Riser

  • Do you BF? Sometimes I can buy another hour in bed by nursing DS is bed with me when he wakes up. Other than that, I don't really have any advice.

How independently does your LO play? Whenever DS wakes up earlier than I'd like, I set him up with some toys next to our bed and keep sleeping. I can usually get another 30 minutes in bed that way. Did it this morning in fact!

  • He is usually quite happy when he wakes up - rolling around and talking to himself. I find it hard to tune him out, though! As a rule, I leave him until 6:00 in hopes that he will go back to sleep or just learn that I won't get him until then. However , I am still up from the moment I hear him...
  • Can you let him stay up later?

  • My LO has pushed her bedtime back till after 8 and only does 2 naps during the day. I would try moving his bedtime bc he is sleeping almost 12 hours which is really good. Start with little increment like 30 minutes or so that way he doesn't get completely out of whack.

  • Yeah, it just may be time to move his bedtime. I've been resisting because he gets soooo tired by 6:00, but I know he will adjust. Thanks!
  • I have to ask you ladies who put their LO to bed at like 6 or 6:30...please do not be offended, this is just a question....it seems SO early to me, mostly because I am a working mom and my husband and I don't get home until 5:45. Do your little ones still take naps and still go to bed that early and sleep a long time? I am amazed by this. My LO gets up at 630 and with his grandparents he gets a morning nap and afternoon nap and then he goes to bed at 9.

  • Monica, to answer your question - yes! He goes down by 6:30 and sleeps 11 or so hours, then naps twice during the day. I have to say, though, that if I weren't staying home (and DH works from home) that we definitely couldn't swing it. We'd hardly see him! So this works for us but definitely isn't possible for a lot of working mamas and daddies.
  • But I will add that his naps are usually just an hour each. We never get the 2-3 hour marathons that I hope for!

I am still in awe of your baby LMAO I think mine thinks he is going to miss something so he doesn't want to sleep that long lol
