Still confused on sizes

My DD is moving on up in clothes again. I always get so confused on sizing. My sister gave me all of her DDs' clothes and I have them separated out in sizes. She had already given away all of the baby stuff so it starts at toddler size 18-24 and 2T and 3T. Is the 18-24 = Carter's 24 or Carter's 18? Gah!
Thanks. I never get this right. I buy pretty much all Carter's as my child still hates the car and I can buy it online.

  • I find that most Carter's runs small. So I would say closer to 18. However, some of their 18-24 stuff fits V perfectly now and some of it swims.....so I guess I would say you have to find one that fits well and then compAre the others to it?

  • Carter's runs small for us. Benjamin is 24 pounds and 31 inches and is in 18 Carter's.

  • I mean is Carter's 18 = to other brands 12-18 or 18-24 ? I have a lot of Gymboree stuff from my sister. I guess I could just hold it up and look and see against other clothes that fit her.

  • My impression is that the Carter's sizes are labeled by ending age (no clue why... makes things confusing), so their 18 mos is other peoples 12-18, and their 24 is 18-24. I'm not sure how it works when you get to 2T though.

  • I just buy stuff and keep the receipts...if it doesn't fit then I take it back :)

  • I have a lot of hand-me-downs, too, and I basically have to go through it all piece by piece because the sizes are ALL over the board.  I compare by holding up clothes against each other to see if they are the same size or not.

In general, though, Carter's runs a little smaller. So my LO is in Gymboree 6-12m, and Carter 12 m  (and some 9m still depending on the outfit, but no more 6m).

  • I also have mostly hand me downs and just gauge by looking at it.. the only oe I know for sure is the few Gymboree outfits that are 12 months seem way too big for her

  • I think each company chooses to make things what ever size they want! Its frustrates me to no end!  I never know what to buy and I'm always worried she will outgrow things before she can get good wear out of them.

I find that carters and oshkosh run so that what ever month it is, that's when she can begin to wear them (and they are usually still big). I recently just phased out all the 6 month things mostly because of season change.

The one brand I find true to size is Janie and Jack.  But I guess you get what you pay for there!  It better fit if I'm paying that price for it!

  • If I'm not mistaken, Carter's sizes correspond to weight more than age?  My little guy can wear some 9 month tops/onesies, but he's in 12 month pants by Carter's.  In Children's Place, he's wearing 9-12 month pajamas.  In Baby Gap, he's in 6-12 month tops/onesies and 12-18 month pants.
