Lip and tongue tie revision

My 3 month old is having his tongue and upper lip tie revised tmrw. We have shallow latch, reoccurring thrush, clogged ducts, mastitis, lots of gas, and a rug burn sensation when he nurses.

Does anyone have experience with having these corrected? Can you tell me what the "after" is like? The lip tie will be lasered and the tongue tie will be clipped.

TIA!

Re: Lip and tongue tie revision

  • My baby had hers done when she was 3 days old, and it *instantly* made a world of difference. We nursed as soon as the bleeding stopped and she was able to latch on a ton better.

  • My son had this done at 10 days--both done with a laser. It wasn't an instant fix despite the severity of the problem. But, we worked closely with a lactation consultant and our pediatrician to make breast feeding work for us. He's now 7 weeks and our experience has improved dramatically but it still isn't easy. We still do tongue exercises to help him figure out what he should do with his tongue and improve his latching. Good luck, I hope it helps you guys.
  • My LO had his done when he was 5.5 months old, both were cauterized. As a newborn he had a hard time latching and I used a shield for 6 weeks. I am actually the one who discovered the tongue/lip tie which is frustrating given how hard he had breastfeeding at first. He was uncomfortable for the first 1-2 days postop but has been ok since. I do feel like his suck is strong, maybe because his latch is better. But either way, he was able to latch before the revisions.

My younger DD had a tongue/lip tie, but after I had the tongue tie corrected at 4 weeks she had no problems nursing. Our pediatric dentist said she'll wait until the two front teeth fall out to address the lip-tie. Eta: sorry, I didn't answer your question. The ENT clipped her tongue-tie and it bled for a few minutes(just a little). She was able to nurse within a half-hour.
