How do you sleep on your left side?

I try to sleep mostly on my left side but I do have to switch to back and right side throughout the night because my left hip starts to hurt. Not only that, the weight of my belly starts to hurt when I lay on my side. I try and use a pillow to make a little prop for my belly but that only work for a short time.

How do you do it? Or do you just not sleep like me? I am not getting much sleep because I am constantly trying to find the right position that doesn't hurt. Not to mention the congestion when I lie down.

Re: How do you sleep on your left side?

  • Pillows, pillows, and more pillows. I did have to switch sides because of my hips. So while I tried to give preference to my left side, I went back and forth.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • I sleep on my left side or right side. The MFM I see said the right side is the second best. If I must sleep on my back, I put pillows under the right side that I'm laying on to relieve some pressure. When I was in the hospital with my first a couple times and I had to be on my back, they made a pillow fort on the right side that I laid on. So even though I was on my back I was slightly angled.

  • Amen sister this is the story of my nights! So hard to get comfy.
  • I'm in the couldn't live without my snoogle club.  I had one with my two older girls and my husband bought me one about two weeks ago.  He laughs at the way I end up completely cocooned in it :)

  • I have a body pillow.  I make sure it goes between my knees, I tuck it under my belly and then hug the very top of it.  I have the same hip issue sometimes, so I have an idea of what you're going through.  Now though, for me, it's my arms.  I am tossing and turning because my arms ache.  I have developed "gestational carpal tunnel" as the doctors have called it.  Due to swelling and having to lay on my sides it's been occurring.  I'm hoping it goes away once these boys are out.  I see a chiropractor quite regularly and it does seem to help, but it never goes completely away.

I'd suggest a long body pillow at the least.  I tried multiple pillows and found that I too kicked them out of bed and ended up in pain because they were gone.  With the one long pillow it tends to stay with me.  Good luck, I'll pray for good sleep for you and an ease in pain!

  • Yeah, at 31 weeks I wasn't getting much sleep. There was really no way to be comfortable between left side sleeping or sitting upright because of heartburn... but only a little longer to hang in there... Good luck!!

  • @jodoc

I had pregnancy induced carpal tunnel with DD and it sucked. But it did go away slmost right after delivery. Surprising I haven't had it this time.

I had a snoogle at the beginning but didn't like it so I returned it. Maybe ill have DH just pick me up a body pillow instead.

  • I fold up two squishy blankets and it supports my hips so much better. I have a body pillow that goes between my legs under my belly and I basically hug it. Also I have another pillow under my head so I am slightly propped up. It works pretty well for me. But now at almost 31 weeks pretty much everything is uncomfortable.

  • I have the snoogle and find it doesn't always help either. I usually fall asleep on my left side but like you find myself tossing and turning throughout the night. I also am not sleeping well at all and dealing with congestion too. Good luck! :(

  • I loved my snoogle. But when I was where you are, not much helped and I was tossing and turning a lot, not to much up to be every hour or so.

I have pregnancy carpal tunnel too... IT SUCKED!

  • I don't. I sleep where I'm comfortable. After 6 previous babies, I realize unless I'm having BP issues, it's fine for me.
  • Well, you have no idea how happy I am to have read that others have or had pregnancy carpal tunnel!  I mean, I'm not happy that others have it, but happy to know I'm not the only one.  I'm also happy to read that it usually goes away shortly after birth.  YES! :D

  • @JoDoc It does go away shortly after birth. Mine stayed around for I think 2ish weeks after I had the girls but it even felt better after the delivery. I just hope I don't get it again should we get pg with #3

  • I just keep telling myself its better for the baby haha.. It's hard. My left hip hurts a lot in the morning.. I use a body pillow an put it between my legs and put a back (or my husband) against my back. It's more comfortable that way. 21 days until I can sleep on my right side. Never been so excited!
  • I find the snoogle works better than multiple pillows but I still usually wake up a lot to toss and turn because my hips will start to hurt. I feel like a rotisserie chicken. I started to get the carpal tunnel in my left hand but it stopped when I got the snoogle.
