How Many??

So I apologize if this has been covered - I'm not on every day so I do miss some topics but I tried looking and didn't see one on this. Anyway - I am getting ready to use my registry completion coupon which is a one time deal. I know exactly WHAT I need to get - however, I'm a little nervous about quantity of certain things. So this may be more directed at STMs and beyond but anyones opinions would be great! Are there items you only got 1 or 2 of and wish you had more - like a water proof matress cover, sheet sets, etc? Likewise, are there things you got way too many of that you didn't end up needing so many - blankets, bibs, pacis, etc? I want to make sure I have what I will need but don't want to get more than necessary. Thanks ladies!

Re: How Many??

  • I liked having several crib sheets.  There was a day where I changed the crib sheet 3 times!  And you can never have too many blankets or bibs in my opinion.

  • I think that about 5 paci's should be enough for 0-3 mo. We have 5 big blankets plus 5 swaddlers. We have two big pump bottles of baby shampoo and then same with all other bath products(2 each) We have 4 sheets and 2 mattress covers. IMO you can never have too many bibs. Also I have tons of burp cloths! I have enough onesies for him to wear 3+ a day for a week in all sizes. (Nb-12mo) I have pants, but idk if I have enough or not. We have two changing stations, so 2 of all of the diaper cream and Vaseline(if your having a boy) and we have 2 changing pads with covers. I think we have 4 covers total. As I think of things ill post more, but that's about what I can remember right now :) good luck!
  • I like having 3-4 crib sheets. I never used a waterproof mattress pad in the crib. If needed I wiped down the mattress since it was waterproof.  I did use the waterproof pads in my bed to lay under baby when nursing.  I nursed in bed a lot though.  My oldest drooled from 2 months on and I needed a big stack of bibs.  My youngest didn't drool at all.  If your baby takes a pacifier it is nice to have a bunch so that you aren't always hunting for one.  As far as blankets, If it wasn't large enough and stretchy enough to swaddle baby in it got wasted.  We had a couple toddler bed sized blankets we used for tummy time or to tuck around baby in the stroller too.

Maybe just keep tags on things.  Its hard to guess what you'll end up needing.
  • I may be strange in that my favorite chore is laundry so there were a bunch of things I didn't need so many of. Here are a few:
Baby towels- had 6, baby only took a bath every 2-3 days so 2 would have been plenty.
Onesies- not to be ungrateful but everyone who came to see DS brought a pack because you can never have too many. Yes you can, we had 55 in 0-3.
Blankets- registered for all that matched the bedding, got those and a bunch more. Other kids were both summer babies so maybe I will use more this time but had way too many. Also was lucky to get a bunch of homemade ones which I love and used the most.
Little scratch mitten things- people loved buying them, babies never kept them on. Same goes for socks. Get outfits with feet built in and fold over mittens if you want them.
Gowns for baby- some people love them, I did not. Can't use them in a car seat and again since socks don't stay on you get a baby with cold feet.
Sheets- had 5 with DS, 2 never got opened. Only got 2 for DD and it was fine, except for that one time we all got a stomach virus but 20 wouldn't have cut it then.
Pacifiers- my kids were addicted, give me hundreds.
Bibs- DS was a big time spitter upper and could use 10 a day. DD never spit and didn't need one until we started food. Burp clothes were the same.
Changing pad covers were important but sticking and extra burp cloth over the regular cover was very effective. Loved using old school cloth diapers for this.

Best thing to do is not open things until you need them and then you have a better idea of what your baby actually will use and you can exchange the rest.
  • Mattress cover - 1

Sheets - 3 - DD wasn't a spitter and our diapers rarely leak, so 2 would have been fine, but if every baby is different and if you have a projectile vomiter, you will need more.

Blankets - don't buy receiving blankets, people like to give those and they are pointless. If you plan to swaddle, get some blankets for that, probably 2-3. We preferred sleep sacks.

Bibs - I'm assuming we're talking those cloth ones for before they start solids. I'd say get about 6. A lot of outfits come with them as well. We didn't need them until my DD started to teeth and then we would go through about 2 per day. For the plastic ones for food, I would get about 4 to start. We seem to accumulate these over time, so I wouldn't stock up too much.

Pacifiers - We had around 10 for DD, a bunch of different brands to figure out what she wanted. She ended up being a finger sucker and never used the pacifiers, so don't stock up too much until you figure out what your baby wants and likes.

Towels - We have 3 hooded towels and it is more than enough, 2 would be fine. We have about 6 washcloths and I would prefer more, I would say about 12 would be perfect.

Bottles - Again, don't stock up until you figure out what your LO likes. My DD wasn't picky, but there were certain bottles that my DH and I preferred. I BFed for over a year (I'm a working mom) and we used about 10 bottles, only the small 4 oz size.

Shampoo/lotion - Don't stock up too much on this stuff. Babies don't use that much soap. I think our large bottle of J&J soap lasted about a year. We go through it quicker now with a toddler.

  • I think you can't have too many pacifiers. However which one you decide to use isn't usually written in stone until LO gets here. I change bibs like crazy on babies so I agree with PP on that. Also don't forget pacifier clips. Swaddled are the one thing I feel like people have too few of. Baby might pee on 2-3 per day some days. I have 2 miracle blankets (my preferred brand) and 4 swaddlemes (hand me downs) plus a few good sizes blankets I can use to swaddle. Also if you plan on buying bottles, but enough so you can put them through the dishwasher. I've worked with families with 3 bottles and it's really a pain. Last thing, a few extra wipe tubs. I personally can't stand fighting with the resell able wipe refill packs. I have a tub for my room, the nursery, and downstairs changing area. Have fun shopping!!!
