Have you seen the book "Mommy Knows Worst" by James Lileks? It's this hilarious compilation of ads and advice columns about child rearing and babies and stuff--hilarity. Like how they thought you shouldn't give babies too much affection and how to make sure your baby gets enough fresh air. By using a baby cage suspended from your window. It's awesome.

Never heard of it, but it sounds crazy. My mom gave me her old prenatal book from when she was pregnant with me in the '80s, and it had a chapter on exercises you should start doing in the hospital to stay attractive to your husband, and it also included a calorie counter in the back with the number of calories in alcoholic cocktails in it... apparently the danger of cocktails was the calorie content, not the alcohol !?!
Anyway, the "literature" we get from our OBs has changed a lot in thirty years...
