Soap nuts

Has anyone tried soap nuts for laundry? Do they really work? I've been looking into them and they get good reviews, so I ordered a small pack to try, but am skeptical. I'm hoping they work since they're so much cheaper than my current detergent!

    They work for me, and I've used them on both HE and non-HE washers. I don't use them on my diapers or on things that are really heavily soiled (like towels used to clean up dog pee). It's not that they don't work on those things, just that I haven't tried them on them.
