Childcare full time for infants

Hello I posted in my local board, but it doesn't look like anyone checks it. I was trying to get an idea of about how much it would be full time for a newborn... I live in the Cleveland (Ohio) area...and I could always call a few places and see if they would give me information. I heard it can be up to $900-1,000month plus there could be a waiting if anyone can help...I am leaning towards staying at home with baby but I want to see how accurate this is, thanks girls!;)

Re: Childcare full time for infants

  • I live in boston area and ours is a family daycare where we pay $275 a week and centers around us are $410 a week. I did a lot of research and $275 is the cheapest on our area and we just happened to love our daycare. They are amazing!

I'm in DFW and will pay ~$230 for 4 days/week. There were some cheaper, some more expensive...

Edit: get on a wait list. When I was pg with DS, I got on a wait list at 4 months. They STILL didn't have a spot after my 3 month leave, so DS had to go to another center for a couple months. All told, I think I was on the wait list right around a year.

  • I live in the Dayton/Cinci area and all the places I called near me were $225-260/wk.  I am hoping to find an in-home caregiver and it seems their prices are a little lower.

  • My government ran daycare center is $140 per week. St. Louis area my aunt pays $250 a week for her work center ran daycare, it's probably more expensive for independently ran centers.

  • I second the DC poster above. Around here you need to sell your kidney to pay for childcare.

Like someone else said, check your county's website for more info. Most daycare sites don't post prices I've noticed, but the county has some information on what you can expect to pay someone typically.

I think I am going to have to stay home and go back to school vs. put her in daycare. I'm not comfortable with it for one and two, as a single parent I can't afford it, even working FT and hopefully getting child support.

Good luck! Just do your homework, get on the wait lists for several, and go with your gut. Church daycare/schools have always been better IMO. I was a former teacher at a few for several years and at least the ones I taught at were wonderful. A lot of times your typical daycare center has lower staff standards...but I realize this isn't the case with everyone, everywhere.

The only way to know is to check going rates in your area's DCP and/or nannies.

Childcare costs range variably, and newborns are always more expensive. I've seen costs as low as $600/month upwards of several thousand a month, depending on where you live.

(And please don't make a decision on whether or not to stay at home based on cost you got approximated from some strangers on the internet.)
    All of this.

I live in a small-ish town in Texas (pop 250,000) and an infant is around $200/week.  My older boys are $100/week each.

  • I live in Houston, Texas in a low to medium COL area.  For daycare, I currently pay $810 a month for 5 days a week. (There were about another $500 in fees.)  My daycare is open 6:30-6:30.  This was on the lower end of the area when I looked. Upper end was about $1250 a month for center care.  It goes down to $710 a month when DS is 15 months.

I was paying about $1500-1600 a month for a nanny for only three days a week.  I preferred the nanny (even though that had its drawbacks, too) as it was easier, but the cost of center care is literally half of the cost of the nanny and for five days as opposed to three.

  • I'm in DC also and pay $2000/mo for daycare at a center.
  • My brother and his wife live just outside of Cleveland (Berea) and pay about $600/month for the center where my niece goes (she's 2 now, might have been a little more when she was an infant).

  • When I lived in Nashua, NH (45mins from Boston) I was paying $279/wk for infant care (8yrs ago) at a very popular NAEYC accredited daycare center. I am sure tuition has gone up since then. But it all depends on whether they are accredited or not, daycare center or home daycare, location to city...etc.

  • I'm in downtown Boston. DD started daycare at 6 weeks, we paid $410/week for a center. The center across the street was $650/week (yikes).

  • I'm in the Chicago suburbs area and daycare centers are about $300-$400/week. We ended up at an in-home daycare at $225/week.
