GTKY: Nails

What are your nails like?  Long, short, fake, real, bitten?  Painted?   If you paint them do you do neutrals?  Darks?  Reds?

I was a biter for 23 years then quit cold turkey.  I keep them barely past my finger tips because I have long nail beds.  I try to keep them painted - usually dark colors in the fall/winter and then pale pinks in the spring/summer.  I wish I could afford to get a manicure every week, but I actually think the paint lasts longer when I do them myself even though I don't do the cuticles as well.  I am a bad cuticle picker.

Re: GTKY: Nails

  • My nails are short. I only like a small amount of white showing.  I hate long nails on me and I hate that dirt gets under them.  I used to bite my nails, but have not for many years. I pick my cuticles too.

Before I had Lily I had gotten into painting my finger nails and accumulated MANY nail polishes.  Now I don't have time and what time I do have, I'd rather spend doing something else. Plus, with doing dishes and constant hand washing, they chip too quickly.  When I do paint them on the rare occasion, I like most colors, but do try to stick to seasonal colors.

  • I was a terrible nail biter as a child. My mom tried EVERYTHING to get me to stop. I just quit one day, like OP, cold turkey.

I still bite them a little when I'm nervous, but not down to nothing, which I think is what I used to do. I like them painted, but don't paint them very often. When I do, I like nude, grey, black, and a plum. My favorite color is Lincoln Park After Dark by OPI.
  • Add me to the biters list.

I stopped when I was pg, but then started again when S was little and not sleeping and I was a hot mess. I have really little nails, even when they are not bitten.

This thread is motivating me to quit cold turkey again... I can do it! :)

  • I have really short nail beds. I'm not a biter, but it might look like I am because my nails are always short. I hate the way the look painted because of it. I'm always jealous of all you people with long nail beds. Anyway, I do paint them occassonally and when I do I stick to seasonal colors as well. Nothing bright, so I'll say the same color examples as you @MommaP12. I did paint last night and went with black polish with a gunmetal colored confetti on top.

  • Mine are natural and kept just a little longer than the end of my fingertips. I've never been a biter. Right now, I have French gel polish, but I often switch up the colors. I go between gel polish and regular to give my nails a break bc I think the gel soak-off process weakens them. When I paint them myself, they literally last about a day. My toes are always painted, and I will do them myself.

  • Not a biter.  I keep mine shorter...just a little past my fingertips.  And I paint them once a week.  :-)

  • My fingernails are usually medium length and never painted (I am TERRIBLE at painting nails so I always make a huge mess when I try to paint my fingernails).

    My toenails are always painted.

  • Real. Not very long. Half painted. I used to have fake nails. Kept them pretty short. I do miss them quite often. But, they aren't in the budget any longer.
  • I actually have natural, long nails.  I have really good nails and they grow well and are pretty strong.  I never paint them because I can't stand when it gets the tiniest bit chipped

  • I'm a nail biter.  I usually have paint on them to try to help with the biting, but it doesn't really work. My nails also peel.  I just ordered a vitamin supplement (Biotin) to help strengthen them.  I paint them all different colors; I prefer really dark colors in the fall.  I think the dark colors look good on bitten short nails.

  • My nails look long, but only because I have deep-set nail beds, so everyone always thinks they are fake.  I get a manicure every 2 weeks, just a trim, file and paint.  99% of the time I get some variation of red (bright or dark is dependent on the season), or almost black.  Midnight in Moscow by OPI ftw.

Fingers: short, painted, neutral pink/flesh tones.

Toes: super short, painted almost always OPI Cajun Shrimp unless we have an event/costume thing coming up.  And I always get a flower. :)

  • My nails are medium length and only painted on special occasions. I do bite them on occasion but try hard not to.

Great Hair by Vitol is a biotin complex that is awesome for hair and nails. I've been taking it for months and have seen a big difference.

  • Fingernails are shorter. Rarely painted.

Toe nails are always painted - usually reds in the summers and purples/grays in winter.

  • I have to keep mine short for work but can grow great nails. I never paint mine because of the amount of washing and hand sanitizer I use.

  • My nails grow fast & are pretty strong, but I like to keep them short. I rarely have them painted. I don't bite them.

  • I keep my short to medium length. I am a filer and am a former nail biter. When I started teaching 12 years ago, I realized how silly I looked biting my nails in front of a room full of kids staring up at me. Quit cold turkey.
I would paint them all.the.time. before kids and I love OPI nail polish. Every few weeks now I'll get the urge but I usually fall asleep before they really finish drying and it doesn't look so good. (Any fast drying tips would be appreciated!)
Dark grays, purples, maroons, blues, browns with a hint of sparkle are my favs.

Ever since someone criticized my gnawed off chipped nails, I started doing neutral gel manicures for big meetings/conferences.

Otherwise fun in-season bold colors, chipped to hell, sometimes gnawed off. My nail beds are tiny due to biting and I don't stop at the nail- the skin around is zombie-landed. But if I grow them past a certain point, I leave them alone.

Here's my hand in front of a toilet paper roll with 2 martinis worth of red splotches.... Haha. I'm @ a work thing, so neutral gel. I really miss my Winnie :((((((((((

  • I'm not into nails really. Mine are medium length and pretty strong naturally. I had a manicure once (wedding day) and I didn't love it. Instead, I just make sure they aren't dirty and leave them natural.
