iPad, iPhone peeps, help me out

OK, ladies, I think I am technologically challenged. When I first got my ipad a few weeks ago, it was displaying imessages on both the ipad and iphone (even though they were sent from the phone). Now, the last message displayed on the ipad is from Oct. 3, and when I try to send a message from it, it fails. Is there a setting I'm missing or something I need to be doing to sync the two up? I was under the impression I could text other i-device users from either the phone or ipad at any time.

    I know on the iPad you can select phone numbers and/or email addresses to send/receive messages. I eventually had to change mine because everything I was texting DH went to the iPad, too. Anyways. The iMessage thing. Did you turn it off in message settings? That's the only idea I've got.

    I have iMessage turned on both on the phone and iPad. Is that not right?

    And, I should add, FaceTime hasn't been working for me from the iPad. Related issue or no?

    I was in my kitchen, so wifi should have been working fine.

    I have this problem every so often with my ipad. I have yet to figure out why. Randomly it stops sending and receiving and then will catch up all at once. It is annoying because I use my ipad at night and not my phone.
