NBFR recommend your bathroom freshness

I have been working on eliminating odors from my home lately. And no matter what I do I can't make my bathroom smell fresh and clean. Even right after cleaning, it smells. I'm sure part of it is that it is a 1961-built rental house and so has not been perfectly maintained as far as moisture and such goes. I fully scrub the bathroom once a week and clean the toilet and area around it daily or multiple times daily. Having a young DS still learning to aim his pee means lots if scrubbing, though I have heard it actually gets worse with age. Lol

Anyway. Recommend your fabulous bathroom cleaners and deodorizers. I need bathroom freshness!

And brownie points of you can tell me how to make the house in general not smell so stuffy.

Re: NBFR recommend your bathroom freshness

  • I like good old fashioned Lysol myself. I spray it around the stool and stuff and just wipe it off once a day and that seems to cut down on most of it for us. I try to throw open the window every now and then and just air it out really good too, but I know not everyone has great ventilation in the bathroom. I've heard vinegar is good for urine smells, and I know I've also heard that puttin little dishes of vanilla out and about is helpful, but I would totally knock it over and make a mess so I haven't tried it.

  • I have various products l like for bathroom cleaving. I like bleach based these days. Also love ( like obsessed) with spic and span. The original orange. I reccommend putting a bowl of baking soda in there. Also a little baking soda left to sit in the drain over night. I swear nothing eliminates odors like baking soda.
  • Baking soda does help so so much! I use scrubbing bubbles bathroom cleaner, but our bathroom is pretty new so I don't have a problem with it smelling. The laundry room always smells though and baking soda has helped in there. Also wiping down all the floors and corners with a bleach solution helps big time if the problem is moisture/musty/moldy smell.

The rest of the house I febreze like a maniac, I have plug ins and I burn candles. I cant stand for my house to smell like the cat/dog.
  • Thanks ladies. I know I'm not the only one who battles home odors but I still hate admitting it. Lol. Just posting this I was like, "Ah, they're gonna think I have a nasty house!" In reality, it may not be showroom perfect, but our home is actually pretty clean. Cleaner than must of my peers' homes I have visited.

And a little confession: other people's house keeping habits or lack thereof has always been a huge reason I don't like to visit friends and would rather they come to me. I'm a terrible friend, I know.

The other suggestions for cleaning have been great.  I bleach.  A lot.  You could get some Damp Rid to try to get some of the musty smell out.

Get a Scentsy plug in (night light sized) and put in a STRONG scent.

I LOVE Scentsy! My MIL is a consultant so I may just tell her I need a plug in. I have a midsize in the living room as soon as you walk in and I use a candle in the bedroom. So the bathroom is really the only place that doesn't have one.
  • Whatever you do, don't just mask it with air freshners or candles. I use them but i dont mix scents and i use them lightly.

Jesus. I was in R's house five minutes and I could still smell hers in my coat this morning. And I dont care for the scent. At all. I would get a headache in that house if i stayed any longer.

I use a bleach based cleaner once a week and i am consistent with my scents. I like a clean cotton or fresh linen smell and everything i get including candles is that as well.

I am also a febreeze believer when i need to eliminate food or bathroom smells.

I got rid of my husband tho and find i dont need it as much. :)

  • I like cleaning with vinegar to neutralize odors.  More and more, I am getting away from air fresheners with chemicals and chemical products for cleaning (but I can't give up bleach!).

  • I love lysol and bleach for cleaning. I also have scentsy that I use, but for the bathroom I usually just hang one of the circle air fresheners in there.

Its true! And by the smell of R's home...its now HER problem.

  • You know, J, that would make my bedroom smell fresher. Lol! He has offered to sleep on the couch when I have joked about it, but I told him no way because at least I can close the bedroom off. I don't want the couch smelling like a stinky man! Lol

And yes, I'm going for actual cleanliness and neutralizing odors rather than masking them. Cover ups make me sick to my stomach.
  • I like spicy scents in fall fall/winter, fresh linen scents in spring, and citrus scents in summer. Sometimes I throw in a cupcake scene or something in the summer if I have the day home with the kids. But I never mix the smells throughout the house.

Opening the windows yesterday did freshen my house quite a bit yesterday. I had a lovely night.

Me too! I like scents. DH has a horrible sense of smell, so I can basically use whatever I want :).

  • I use method, all natural cleaning products, but they smell really good!

I use Scentsy as well, but really only burn on in the bathroom or elsewhere when guests are coming over.

And, you're not a horrible friend. I have the same issue, worse since having children. Several people came over & would be using the shower the next day, and I needed to replace (because I refuse to clean a $4 shower liner) the shower liner anyway, I went out and bought one just for them. A friend of mine laughed and me and said she couldn't believe I did that just so they could shower. It made me cringe, because, well, who wouldn't?

I'm judgmental when it comes to cleanliness & I always think my house is disgusting. I once cleaned my moms house when I stopped by because the dust was driving me crazy, she's a clean freak too so it made it worse!
  • It drives me up a wall when I am to busy to clean like I would like and it piles up. Like being school and working... leaves little time for cleaning. But I find I can't study if the house is not clean to my liking.
