High-Risk Pregnancy

Cervical length down:(

Well my appt was today. I had high hopes that I may be able to go back to work. Contractions have been control, feel good after doing light activity. The MD seemed pretty convinced too...until my US, which shows that I went from a steady 1.5cm to 0.7cm. But I'm not on bedrest, still instructed to do light activity and not to go back to work just yet. They want to see me next week and go from there (I figured). The doc did suggest that I increase my Procardia to 6x a da which would be every 4 hours. I'm also on progesterone suppositories nightly. Do you think Im not sticking the progesterone far enough? When I talked to the nurse she said I just had to place it in my vagina in order for it too work.

Re: Cervical length down:(

  • Sorry to hear about your u/s. Progesterone has nothing to do with why your cervix might be shorting. I think your activity is the reason. Stay off your feet. Your dr is nuts to not officially put you on bedrest.

  • I second Kneenah!!! You should not even be doing light activity...you should be laying in bed or sitting in a recliner all day...only gettin up to pee! I am mobile so can't see how many weeks you are but if its less than 34w your doc is nuts! Try to stay off your feet as much as you can until next week.

  • I agree about staying off your feet.  How many weeks are you?  The increasing weight of baby on your cervix is putting more pressure on it and can cause it to continue to shorten (even with no contractions).  Is your cervix shortened due to contractions or do you have IC?  Are you on pelvic rest?  I would definitely at least stay off your feet until your next check in and see where you are then.

  • Well, I'm 25 weeks...I got a cerclage 2 weeks ago...Shortening is due to cervical insufficiency. Will I regain length? Some post I see say yes some no....I am on pelvic rest. No opening of the cervix, I know I'm not going back to work and already turned in my FMLA
  • You need to be on some sort of bedrest. If you are not working anyway, there is no reason to be sitting up or standing for more than an hour or so a day. Have you thought about seeing an MFM or high risk ob?

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • Okay, at least you have a cerclage, that makes me feel so much better! But still bed rest would be best....I would imagine you cervix won't stop changing or increase unless you are totally off your feet! Mine stopped chaning and actually gained 3mm from bed rest at the hospital but since I have been home it has shortened more because I am doing more activity, but I am 34w so it's not as big of a deal! Take care of yourself this week and relax:)

  • Got my cerclage due to IC but mine was preventive. If you got yours two wks ago yours was a rescue which the chances of success decreases to 50-40% success. A cerclage doesn't stop you from shortening it helps prevent it from opening but foes not gareenty. You need to be off your feet. The cervix is dynamic so one wk you can gain a little length then the next you can loss it and more. For it to stay stable you have to release pressure from your cervix. Even with my preventive cerclage and bedrest I began to shorten. It finally reached a plato at 27 wks. It stood at 1.8cm till my last u/s at 32wks. I am currently 35.2wks I get my cerclage removed on Thursday.

    Best of luck
  • Hi- I had cerclages with both my pregnancies and went full term. But I was put on bedrest and modified bedrest when my cervix reached a 2 and continued to shorten. You really need to be on bedrest. Put yourself on bedrest at least until 32 weeks. I can't believe you are not on bedrest especially with having a cerclaged placed so late. My friend went into labor at 26 weeks because her doctor didn't put her bedrest after her cerclage. Her baby is doing great now but spent 3.5 months in NICU. Best of luck.
