People Say Stupid Sh**t

Random Lady: When are you due?
Me: January
Random Lady: Ugh that is the worst month ever to have a baby. Birthdays usually suck for those born in January; poor kid..

Yeah I was at "Boo and the Zoo" waiting in line for DD to play a game. I eventually laughed bc I didn't have the words to respond.
  • Really...well I think January babies are cool.

    Me too!
  • FFFC: I really hate my due date (it'll be between Christmas and New Years). I feel like I slighted this poor baby. We have a ton of Dec birthdays on both sides, DH and my sister included. They hate their birthdays being just a few days before Christmas.

I have had people tell me the opposite actually. "Oh how fun!". And I find it harder and harder to play it like I'm excited (ftr, I'm thrilled and excited I'm even pg in the first place and have a sticky baby after my losses, so really, I'll take any due date I can get). With all that said, it's very rude for anyone to say something like that.

  • I'm due at the end of January, I'm betting baby stays in until Feb...
I don't see why January would be a bad month! Living in TX, I think it's quite fortunate that it'll be winter when I get huge! (because its only cool here for like 3 months) the holidays being in December is completely separate- totally not a big deal. what a stupid thing to comment on.
    People are dumb!
  • Umm, I would like to know her reasoning.

My cousin, who's a physician's assistant said that really we hit the birthday jackpot because I wouldn't be big while it was hot and the extra weight would keep me warm in the winter. Lol!

Is it that when the baby will be born it'll be cold out? What a horrible thing to say. Ugh! Some people...

  • The first thing my FIL said when we told him our due date was, "what if it's a blizzard when you go into labor?!"

If it is, it is! Geesh.

The only reason I was slightly sad that my baby was going to be born in January is that I won't be able to take my baby on walks in the stroller while I'm off work. Oh well. I'm just as happy to be a hermit with my LO for 8 weeks!!!!
  • This made me giggle/snort because I get something similar pretty much every single day. Now that it is very obvious I'm pregnant I'd day at least 5 out of my 18ish patients per day ask when I'm due. 50% of those people usually say, "oh" I/my sister/my son/my cousin/my friend have a birthday around the holidays and he/she hates it.

    It's hilarious.

Multiple people have told me to have baby Jack's birthday celebrations in July instead of the week before Christmas.

Luckily I get the occasional I/my sister/my kid/my friend has a birthday then and they aren't scarred for life.

  • My birthday is in January. My H's birthday is in January (3 days before mine). We went on our honeymoon ON our birthday week last year and it was pretty much the most amazeballs week of my life. I'd like to internet bitch slap that woman. On behalf of what will now be an entire family of January birthdays.

    Married: 9.22.12 - DD: 1.7.14 - EDD 2: 10.30.17 - J14 OG
  • My SIL is a New Year's Eve baby and the only thing we've heard is " o maybe this baby will be born on SILs birthday! " DD1 was also due 3 days before BILs birthday and managed to hit my dad's birthday...Nobody has mentioned the holidays thing. SIL always just gets a really awesome Christmas and then a party for her birthday too typically.

I think January is great, I was so hot and swollen in the end of my last pregnancy I'm loving the chillier weather!

  • It was all I could do not to fire back by saying "Yeah well when you have two miscarriages you don't care when the baby comes."
This is exactly what I was thinking, @sugarland726. I actually probably would have said, "I'd rather give birth to a baby in January 2014 than miscarry a baby like I did in January 2013." I think horrendously stupid comments deserve shocking and blunt responses. It makes those people think twice about saying things like that the next time.

I completely agree. Shocking the hell out of someone causes them to pause and think about what they said. Like when you touch their stomach when they touch yours. If I had been comfortable sharing my history with DCP then I would have. At the time, I was still keeping things private. If someone says something like that now I am more likely to be able to actually say it.

I totally agree! I wish I would have been more on my toes b/c I would have been awesome to shoot back a response.
  • Some people claim that having a baby in the early months of the year actually puts the baby at an advantage over those born later in the year since they tend to develop more quickly (faster, taller, stronger etc). There have also been studies on 'the birth bias' and how people born in the first part of the year tend to be chosen more for leadership roles in the future.
January babies are the best:) Just sayin'....

  • I'll admit that for a fleeting second, when thinking of LO's birthday parties in the future, I was a little sad because I am a July baby and had fond memories of going on camping weekends, having pool parties, and cookouts which obv won't be a possibility in New England for a January birthday. With that being said, my brother is a 1/14 birthday and he always did other fun things for his birthday, so we will just have to create new memories!

  • I'll take being pregnant during the winter over a Texas summer any day. I actually want this LO to come in January instead of February, since DD is a February baby (a Valentine's Day baby, actually, so I am no stranger to "what an unfortunate birthday" comments). But as long as he comes out healthy, I don't care when he shows up!

  • My LO is due right after New Years, and the way I look at it, all of his friends will be off from school, and it will be easy to do really awesome parties when he's older.

I'm 'due' in Jan, but will be induced a few days before Christmas at the latest. I've had tonnes of "oh those poor babies will have awful birthdays for the rest of their lives!.." comments. Yeah...because after IF, when we were going through fertility treatments my FIRST concern was that the babies have a good birth month?! Idiots!
Pretty much this, word for word. (minus the induction time frame, which hasn't really been discussed yet) As if we were going to delay our IVF cycle in case it worked AND we got twins, so they wouldn't have birthdays near Christmas? Please.

Yes my DD was born in August so I got to spend my last trimester in the heat. I'm LOVING hitting my third trimester in the fall.
