Biting, Ouch!

DS has been biting me while BF'ing for a few weeks. This past week it has gotten unbearable: he bites down hard, pulling back with his teeth. I'm bloody and sore and honestly get anxiety flutters every time I need to feed him. He has been biting either at the beginning of a session, pre-let down, or after about 3 minutes of nursing, but I can't really tell when he's about to bite (or I'd unlatch him). I've tried: screaming "No!" (he either giggles or cries), pinching his nose shut (I find this difficult since I'm supporting his head with one hand and my breast with the other), pushing him into the breast (he doesn't let go quickly enough), and have been putting him down next to me for a minute or so after he unlatches, which makes him cry. Nothing seems to be working, and I am getting majorly stressed out and he has definitely not had enough breastmilk over the past few days.

What to do? I really want to keep nursing at least until 12 months, and I find pumping tough (do it at school and would hate to do it at home). Should I try a nipple shield to protect myself until he outgrows this?

  • If you've tried everything and it's not working, I would finish the feeding. He bites, you unlatch him and button up your blouse, end of that feeding. Maybe try again an hour later.

I agree with this! That's what worked for us. Took about 3 times.

  • That's a good idea. There is a part of me that is nervous about ensuring he nurses enough, but he needs to learn that this is not ok.
