27 mo suddenly a terrible sleeper. Advice needed

Hi ladies... I could use some advice. DS has turned into a terrible sleeper over the past 3-4 weeks. Bed time can take sometimes over an hr. He doesn't want to fall asleep in his crib. Then came the climbing out of the crib. We took the front piece off of the crib and bought a safety rail and tried that for a few nights. That didnt seem to work so we put the crib back together. The crib is at the lowest, DS still can climb out. Once he is asleep he will stay in the crib but most nights he wakes up in the middle of the night and wants to be out of his room. Some nights it seems like he has night terrors, other nights he is just awake. We were taking him into our bed if nothing else worked but we decided we dont want to go down that slippery slope. So last night when DS climbed out of his crib and came in our room after being up for almost 2 hrs with both DH and I trying to put him back down, we told him he had to sleep on the floor. We gave him a blanket and pillow and finally he fell asleep on the floor for the rest of the night. I don't know what we should do. We have tried a lot of things and nothing works. Some people say get him a big boy bed other people say keep him in the crib as much as you can. However with the climbing out at times it seems like it's time to say goodbye to the crib.
Sorry this is so long. Just looking for some advice or re-assurance things will get better. We are spoiled since he has been a great sleeper for a very long time now. We just don't know what caused the switch.
TIA for any advice or re-assurance =)

  • I would also get rid of the crib. We went to a twin bed. We kept the bedtime routine as close to normal and the transition was pretty smooth. He was a bit older than your LO (about 2 1/2).

  • We went through this with our first, & as of the last couple weeks are going through it with our DD #2. Something about this age, maybe 2 year molars? I also read they start having more vivid dreams around this time...

I have no good advice, we got rid of the crib & put a gate at DDs door. We basically let her CIO when we first put her down & then just bring her into our bed when she cries in the middle of the night (so she doesn't wake the other two). Not ideal, but I'm a firm believer in doing what works to keep everyone happy. If him sleeping on the floor next to your bed or in bed with you all doesn't bother you, I'd say go for it. Probably an UO, but I think you just get through the tough phases the best you can. If it's any assurance, my oldest went through this phase around the same age (ending up in our bed every night), and now she happily goes to bed & stays in her bed every night. GL!
