Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Any vegetarian moms?

Hi all,

I'd like to add protein into DD's diet, but am looking for options other than meat. Any suggestions? She is 8 months old, and I think it may be too early for beans. She is EBF other than 2 oz. of fruit and 2 oz. of veggies per day.

TIA!

  • New studies find that delaying of foods does nothing. Give her beans, tofu, ect. Though meat is best.

  • I'm not vegetarian, but DS1 was eating beans at 8 months. We didn't really delay anything either. Our pedi basically said everything other than honey was fine. Assuming you don't have a history of allergies, you could do nut butters, just spread them very thinly. Cheese, Greek yogurt, tofu, greens like spinach.
  • DD is 7.5 months and loves lentil soup and I'd say she's picky about what she likes. I usually use dried beans (instead of canned) when cooking so I'd soak them in water overnight before cooking and it helps with bloating.
  • Is your husband a vegetarian? Why do you want your baby to be a vegetarian? Just curious.

  • Veggie mom here...planning on beans, lentils, tofu and egg yolk (down the road). Dr. says veg diet totally doable :) GL
  • My pedi said beans were okay to introduce and my son's 6 months.

I would not recommend soy as it is not something anybody should be eating due to the high amount of phytoestrogens among other unhealthy components.

Do you do dairy and/or eggs these foods will help you baby get enough of the vitamins and amino acids that they need. I also agree that there is no reason to wait on foods just make sure it is small/soft enough for baby to eat.
I am vegetarian and I agree with this. I made pureed lentils with sweet potato to make it more palatable, but you could puree any bean. We haven't tried dairy, but Greek yogurt is supposed to have the most protein.
