3rd Trimester

Is feeling of kicks/movement affected by weight of mother?

This is my first pregnancy.  I'm 28 weeks pregnant and significantly overweight (I was overweight before getting pregnant, and as expected have gained some additional weight).  I've been feeling some things that I am pretty positive are movement, but not necessarily definite kicks (at least as my pregnant friends have described. note- friends are not overweight)  So....I guess my question is, is my weight affecting how I feel the baby move/kick, or is it just too soon yet to feel definite kicks?  I plan to ask my Dr at my appointment tomorrow, but was hoping to get some additional thoughts and feedback.

  • I just want to echo the points above.  Your weight will really only affect others' ability to feel the baby kick and move on the outside.  In the third trimester you should be feeling lots of movement and should be able to feel baby on the outside as well.  Keep in mind, people will offer different descriptions of how kicks and movements feel so even if you're not feeling what your friends are describing, it doesn't mean that you're not feeling baby move.

It might be a little early for kick counts, but generally, If you aren't feeling at least 10 movements in two hours you should call your OB.

I am also significantly overweight also.  I don't think it hinders the mother's feeling it but definitely other people feeling it on the outside.  It may be the position of the baby, where the placenta is, being a first timer.  I have an anterior placenta (in the front) and that keeps the movement felt less noticeable. Yes talk to doc.
I agree with this.  I am obese and have had no issues feeling fetal movement in either one of my pregnancies.  It is more difficult for DH to feel baby though.

I'm overweight too, size 22/24 pre pregnancy. I don't feel much movement but I've been told it's because I have an anterior placenta. And I'm a FTM so my uterus is tighter that STMs+. Do you know where your placenta is? Maybe ask the doctor that.

Also you should ask doctor tomorrow about staring kick counts. When you focus I bet you'll feel more than you think. I know I did.

  • Also just remembered a great book I read at the beginning of my pregnancy. It was called "big, beautiful, and pregnant". It helped weed out a lot of the misinformation plus size preggos get or myths we hear.

  • Not with me, I weighed significantly more with my first pregnancy than this one. Feelings are the same for me.

  • Can I ask something off topic?? I am overwieght too and having a hell of a time finding maternity clothes  - for plus size.  I have been to the Motherhood outlet in my area (MD) and it SUCKS!  The few items I have found and re-ware are from Old Navy.  Can you all help with other suggestions???

    HELP! :)

  • Try destination maternity.com. I'm overweight and from md too. I have a bunch of stuff from this website.
  • I got some clothes from target too. They go up to xxl
  • Isn't destination maternity the same as motherhood?  I could have sworn their stuff is identical.
  • Thansk, I'll check Target on-line. The last time I went into the store they had a limited selection of anythign maternity.
