starting cereal

We just started DD on cereal twice a day. About an hr after she nurses we give her about a tbs of cereal. She takes it great and could go for more. My question was do you still nurse as much when starting cereal.  DD goes about every 3 hrs.  Also, should I give her a sippie or water to help wash it down? How do you do it?  Thanks ladies

Re: starting cereal

  • My LO is 4 and 1/2 months, and I've been doing cereal once a day for about 2 weeks.  I give him 2 fluid oz of breast milk mixed with 2 tablespoons of cereal in the evening around 7.  He happily finishes it, and then nurses about an hour later during his bedtime routine. I agree that his nursing should not be decreased.

  • LO normally has 6oz a feed (with 5-6 hours in between feedings...generally "breakfast", "lunch", "dinner" and maybe one little one after that). When doing cereal we usually do 2oz of that with cereal (whole grain oatmeal is what we do though we started on rice - the oatmeal is more nutritious) and then feed her 4oz from the bottle. I also nurse.

  • agreed, keep fluids the same from formula or breast milk when starting out. Do everything slowly to see how your baby reacts. I'm starting cereal just once a day for a week to see how he takes it and then may go up to twice a day. Cereal after breast or formula milk.
