Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Stroller Transition

So, my DH and I finally decided to spend the money and buy a BOB stroller. Up until last week, we'd been using our Graco, mainly snapping the car seat in and out from the car to the stroller. DS has always been happy with this arrangement. When he got big enough, we'd sometimes just stick him in the stroller front facing without the car seat and, for the most part, he was fine with that.

This past week we've been trying to transition him to the BOB. So far, he seems to really not like it. He fusses when we put him in and usually continues to fuss until he breaks down and just cries while we're out.

We've adjusted the straps, we've tried one of us walking where he can see us, tried to distract him with toys. Nothing seems to calm him down. It was so bad tonight (screammmming!) that we took him out of the stroller and carried him home, while the other pushed the expensive new stroller. We called it the walk of shame:)

Anyway, has anyone had a similar experience? What did you do? Did your LO eventually warm up to their new wheels?

I'm hoping he just needs time to warm up to a new ride (and get more used to being front facing all the time), but it sucks that this is happening every time...I really don't want him to hate it.

Any advice/ suggestions would be ever so appreciated!

Re: Stroller Transition

  • that seems odd. We switch between Graco and BOB all the time-Graco for when we're out and about (it just stays in the car) and BOB for all other things. BUT I rarely, if ever, put the car seat with DD in there. she hates her carseat (she's only OK in the car because i have one of those annoying mirro/light up magic shows in her facE) so for the first 3 months I just wore her, and after that I put her in the stroller.

I do have specific "stroller toys" she likes and only get IN the stroller. I know you said you tried distracting him, does he have the toy in his hand when you put him in there? He's probably just  use to being higher up and kinda in your face. I guess just keep trying.....i'm sorry :(.

  • Loading the player...
  • I called my BOB the most expensive diaper bag carrier for months.  My daughter wanted to be worn while out and would bawl in the stroller.  She hated her infant seat so that never worked and she would bawl in the stroller without it because she couldn't see me.

She is now very happy in there and even naps while out (this is huge).

Anyways...we only have the one stroller so never switched.  It is odd that baby would be fine in one and not another.  Is it possible the angle of the back of stroller is different enough to bother him?  Is it more or less reclined than the graco?  Are you putting him in when he's tired or hungry?

That's all I can think of!  Maybe try having him in the graco a few more times with some favorite toys/blankets then use the same toys/blanket in the new stroller to make it more familiar?

  • Hmm weird. We just kept with the Graco. Why fix something that isn't broke?

  • Great advice! I'm going to try the stroller toy suggestion and see if that helps. You guys give me hope, I'm sure after enough exposure he'll catch on.

OP, if I weren't such an avid outdoor person (jogger, hiker, blah blah...) I wouldn't bother with the switch, but the bob is so much better for the rugged stuff...I really want it to work, I want my LO with me on my adventures:)

    Thanks again
  • I love the BOB-good turning and like PP said my DD will actually nap for a little in there when she's feeling the need (the angle is so much better for napping then the Graco).

I will say this-how old is your LO? Any signs of teething perhaps?  Im just asking because our DD is cutting 4 teeth (4...shoot me. SHE ALREADY HAS 4 WHY DOES SHE NEED 4 MORE  SO SOON) and is much quicker to whine in the stroller than she used to be.  She's much happier being worn, which kind of isn't fun since she's over 20 lbs of muscle and love AND she's crawling, so she really hates any sort of confinement as it is.

Perhaps you just happened to be making the transition during a particular developmental leap or teething, and that explains some of the fussiness?

  • @VPGIRL06 that's an interesting thought. He's 7 months and his first tooth has just popped through. I hadn't even considered that, as he hasn't seemed to be displaying what I understand to be the fussiness many babies go through when teething (I'm sure it's combing...and seriously, 4 more? Ouchhhh...I feel for you!) but that could very be the problem. I'm going to be trying up use the BOB a lot during the next week, so we'll see what happens!
  • Might be a silly question...but what is a BOB?

    New Mommy!!!

  • A BOB is a brand of of jogging/all terrain strollers :)

  • Update: he did really great in the bob this morning when we went for our workout:) not sure if it was the toys, the fact that he had just eaten and napped... Probably all of the above, but yay:)

    Hopefully this continues!
  • NICE!  I think thats just baby MO.....i've realized with my DD that if she doesn't like something, but its something that's either necessary (like baths or car rides) or something i kind of want her to dig (like tummy time...) i just have to kinda keep doing it. luckily she's fairly adaptable so she usually does throw fits for MONTHS lol
