Blair can be a boy, right?

My maiden name was Blair & I really had the intentions of naming my first born Blair. I found out last week I am having a BABY BOY! We are so excited!
Of course as the name discussions have become more relevant, one of my friends seems pretty convinced that BLAIR totally a girl's name.
I do not want to be insensitive/naive to the idea of being teased in school if it is "a girl's name." Is it though? It seems to be working alright for Blair Underwood. I would love to hear your honest (& thoughtful) feedback.
Thanks for your help.

  • My father's name is Blair so I've always associated it with being a male name. However, I did go to high school with a female Blair but I think it can definitely go either way.

I get a feminine vibe only because the only Blair I know of is Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl:

  • I work with a Blair (female) and when I hear the name always think of "Facts of Life" or "Gossip Girls."  I love the idea of honoring your family...IMO, middle name spot.

There is a vendor that I work with and their name is Blair Nevers. Friggin love that name. I have no idea if its a woman or a man. Also there's That black actor, Blair Underwood. He had a tv show that was just cancelled 2 days ago where he played a cop in a wheelchair.

  • I initially think girl but I wouldn't think twice if I met a guy named Blair. I really like it for both a boy or a girl. Honestly kids have such crazy names these days, I can't imagine the kid will be made fun of for being named Blair.

  • I personally think Blair is masculine enough to be a boys name. However I was reading this book about names and the crossover of male names. The book stated that classic boy names that over time have been given to girls automatically becomes a femine name. The girl dominates the name (like Mason, Toni and Charlie-which is my daughters name:-).
All that being said. I still believe Blair is masculine and wouldn't think otherwise. Just like little boys named Charlie. My son's name is Carrington and I just recently found out some girls share that name but I think it is also a name that will stay masculine. His nickname Carri , however is a bit femine but he is boyish enough to handle it :-)
  • My father in law is named Blair and I also have an aunt named Blayre. My aunt gets asked all the time "your parents wanted a boy, didn't they?" because around where she lives it is associated only with boys. I consider is generally unisex because I've met both males and females with the name. It was originally a boys name as well. I think you're clear to name your little boy Blair if you want to use the name.

mmm... Blair Underwood is definitely not feminine!

Blair Underwood is freaking handsome, and he graduated from a great college. Pretty great association imho. But I am a child of the '80s.

  • I've known one boy Blair and one girl...it always felt like a more masculine name. Plus I preferred the male Blair to the female :)
  • I love it as a boy's name! I've never known a Blair but like others have said, I definitely wouldn't think twice about a boy named Blair, I would think about how much I liked the name :-)
