Getting rid of the monitor?

My twins are 15 months. Recently their video monitor broke. Since it broke I've actually slept better bc I'm not staring at it for every sound. My twins sleep in separate rooms upstairs and we sleep downstairs. I can hear them as we don't live in a mansion. The monitor is under warranty so BRU sent us the gift card to replace it. I'm really debating do we need it now at this stage bc I do sleep better or would you recommend us replacing it as they head towards 2 years old? Thoughts?

Re: Getting rid of the monitor?

  • Mine are younger than yours so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. I don't keep mine on at night because I wouldn't sleep either. But I love having it for when they do wake me up, so that I can turn it on and see if I actually have to get out of bed or not. Same goes for naps. If I turn on the monitor and the one who was making noise is still laying down, I have a chance that they might fall back asleep. If I go in the room and they see me, forget it. Also worth noting that I have a friend that uses it for her 4 year old. She can talk to her from her bed without having to get up. Totally worth replacing in my opinion!

  • I never had one so you can definitely not have one! If you can hear them fine and they aren't waking up a lot, I would ditch it. I have my audio one on still for my 16mo twins but also use white noise so I wouldn't hear them well otherwise.

  • I have a singleton (expecting twins) and have a sound monitor but my friend with a 2 year old still uses her video monitor in her two story. I saw that it was helpful when they transitioned into a toddler bed, when she was sick and other situations I've been envious even with our older kids that mine was just sound. That being said, if you truly feel like its not necessary right now.. get one for sound that you have on hand with the gift card and buy some diapers or clothes with the balance. :)

  • I still use my video monitor with my 3 yr olds- I felt it was a lifesaver when they went to toddler beds at 2.  Now I turn the volume off at night- so when they do wake me up at night I can look to see what is going on before I go into their room.
  • At that age I'd probably just get a sound monitor. And use the rest of the gift card for other necessities.

  • I'm a light sleeper so I'm not sure how long we'll use the monitors. Maybe if we are on the first floor and they're in their cribs. As far as using it to talk to a 4 year old rather than getting up, that just screams lazy to me.
