How often do you do the following "bad" things?

1. Let your LO watch tv? or have the tv on in their presence, even if they aren't watching? (since the AAP also says this is "bad")

2. Give your LO sweets / juice / "bad food"? ETA: bad food may also include things like french fries. Basically anything you know someone would side eye you for giving.

Re: How often do you do the following "bad" things?

  • 1. Most weekdays she watches zero tv and we don't have it on around her, but if she if we need a second she will get 10 minutes of sesamestreet.org. On the weekends we are a bit more lax and we might have a football game on one day, and maybe 30-60 minutes total of Yo Gabba Gabba or Sesame Street. We let her watch while we cut her nails if nothing else. So I would say under 2 hours a week.

    2. I probably let her eat something "bad" at least a few times a week. Definitely in moderation. I will let her have a bite of cookie or ice cream, we don't really do juice because I don't drink it myself but I am not against it. She doesn't go wild for sweets or anything but she seems to appreciate them.

I do let her eat Nutella pretty often. Not sure how "bad" that is :)

  • 1. Tv is on in the background a lot. I don't like a quiet house and dh watches sports on the weekends. Though ds has not shown much interest so I haven't put the tv on for him yet.

    2. Not big on giving him sweets. Gave him a couple spoons of my ice cream the other day and that was a first. He gets juice when he steals his brothers.

  • oh also I do hope this turns out with someone sanctimonious (sanctimomious?) coming in and shaming the crap out of us. WOOOO!!!

*I also don't believe in being like - yeah I suck as a mom, isn't it awesome to let your kid watch 7 hours of tv a day and only survive on cookies? But I do think there is a balance :)

  • Our tv is on all the time. She doesn't watch it, I just like the noise. She actually looks at it about 15 min/ day, because she likes Chica on Sprout. That squeaky little chicken is magical.

She eats what we eat. So if it's something " bad" she gets it. But that's rare. Maybe once a week.
  • Haha piffle!

No tv on the weekends, and I'm not sure about what the nanny does. It's usually on in the afternoon, and I don't have a problem with it.

I confessed my bad food giving awhile ago... They probably get around 3 "bad" things a week. Pizza, mac n cheese, etc.

  • 1. I have the TV on for noise all day mostly it is on the music channel that doesnt have commercials. Maybe 2 hours a day I turn on PBS when dinosaur train and Daniel Tigers neighborhood are on (she loves them) but it is just on in the background while she plays and she may stop and watch it for a minute or two.
    2. I dont give her juice unless she is constipated otherwise she will have diarrhea. Desserts I have started giving her little bites when we are having them and are out somewhere, at home I try not to have anything until after she goes to bed. She loves mac n cheese and chicken tenders but I dont really consider them bad foods either. We never really eat french fries or fast foods so she doesnt get them cause they are never around.

  • 1. Every mornin otherwise I would not be able to get ready and at night while I fix dinner.

    2. Not too often. I cook pretty healthy meals and I rarely let her have sweets or fried food. Now with dd1 bein older she gets it more often but I try my hardest to do a good balance of food

  • 1. The TV is rarely on in our house, but we do put it on sometimes if we need to do something (take a shower, take the dogs out, etc.). She really likes Toopy and Binou when it's on.

    2. Bad food - 1-3 times a week maybe. She's starting to eat what we eat.

Lol, every day. LO entertains himself in his pack and play with cartoons on for about an hour every morning so DH and I can get ready for work. And on most days we give Henry a little bit of dessert after dinner -- a little bit of ice cream, graham crackers, a small cookie, or something similar. That's more DH's thing.

  • 1. He never watches TV. Just not interested. It's on around him maybe 30 min. A day during week and an hour or two on weekends.

    2. Pretty much never. Cake on his b day. A bite of frozen yogurt once. Occasionally white bread or processed food. We just don't eat "bad" stuff that often other than DH at lunch.

I guess we are the only ones who give our kids treats :)

  • Oh lord. I will go straight to mommy hell if I admit how often I do these things. I do make an effort to feed her healthier than we eat though. When we eat utter junk (pizza rolls anyone?) I cook her up some veggies instead or something. But if we eat dessert, so does she. She usually has a bite or two of whatever I am eating.

  • I think part of why I am ok with J having treats is that she doesn't go to town on them or anything. If we give her a cookie, she will eat like 1/4 to 1/2 of one, doesn't want any more. So it makes it easier to say oh ok you can have a little vs if she was going ape for it.

I don't keep most stuff around the house but it just seems like occasions come up pretty often. Like Friday we went to dinner with friends at a diner, we had fries and chicken fingers and J had a little. Then today my mom brought me homemade chocolate chip cookies so she had part of one.

I cook everything anyway and its healthy so nothing shameful other than sesame street.

  • The tv is on a few hours a day but we don't sit down and watch it together. He does watch an hour or two of football with Dh on the weekends. He gets a mini ice cream cone or frozen yogurt two or three times a week.

  • Dd2 watches her sign language CDs. She loves them. We don't have the TV on much and dd1 mostly uses the iPad or kindle. She gets occasional cookies if we make them or ice cream. I don't buy anything other than nilla wafers. Honestly she is very small so while most of her calories are healthy, I def let her have treats if we do.

  • We don't really watch TV that much with LO around, but he will sometimes turn it on himself and then he will watch it for like 5 minutes and move on to something else.

Re: unhealthy food - yeah, we've given him things like pizza, ham, fries, things that we don't cook ourselves if that is what we are eating.  We always supplement with veggies or fruits, and it's not everyday.  Only sweets he's had were his bday cake.  When we are out and he is about to have a meltdown, I do use Fig Newtons to calm him!

  • 1. The tv is on after breakfast and is usually more of a background noise for Ella. She may watch the first few minutes but then goes about her business terrorizing the living room until nap time. She loves having some kind of music on, even if she's in her high chair in the kitchen with me while I'm cleaning up I will put sound cloud on for her with a playlist and she settles right down.

    2. She eats what we eat. She's not big on fries I've come to find out..we don't have them often but she's choked the last 2 times she had a go at one so no more fries for her lol. Lasagna, Mac n cheese, chicken strips..I will do up peas for her because she absolutely loves them. We let her try everything we eat, my older daughter let her try the laughing cow cheese today..she loved it! She gets ice cream off of us too some nights. Watered down juice is part of her snack, I'm still giving her formula as well as whole milk. She weighs 20lbs so she's a lil smaller I guess but she eats pretty well anything so I'm not worried :)

  • 1. The TV is on for background mainly for me. We live out in the country and there's a ginormous field with who knows what the farmers are growing back there and I need to have some noise. I do mostly keep it on PBS Kids just because I don't want him watching just anything, but only a few shows catch his attention...Sesame Street is the main one. He'll watch for a few minutes and then go play...and then come back for a min then go play. I think it's really Elmo that he likes...

    2. I do give him watered down juice...the Motts for Tots once in the afternoon. It's like 10% juice and the rest is water. As for junk food....we eat pretty well around here, but we are suckers for sweets! We let him eat shortbread cookies oh and he likes the baby goldfish. He gets small amounts, but a few times a week. LO would rather have fruit or yogurt.

  • 1. DS watches more TV than I like, but when he is at my mom's during the weekdays, he watches Sesame Street and other PBS shows that are on during the day.  At night, he watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  When we are home we always have the TV on, it's background noise/music.

    2. DS does not get juice, but he will have the occasional cookie. We do allow him to have whole wheat organic animal crackers daily.  DS does eat fries actually he loves them, I think it's the idea of holding it by himself. So we bake them.

  • 1. Wesley watches about 15 minutes of the news in the morning while I get dressed and then he watches about 15 minutes of Spongebob with Dad while I'm cooking dinner. On the weekends I have the TV on for background noise but he doesn't really watch to much of it. He would rather chase the dog around the house or play with his toys.

    2. He does have "bad foods" probably 3 times a week.  He usually eats whatever we are eating and when I have french fries every once in a while I will let him have a few as well.  He really likes string cheese, fruit/veggie pouches and he has puffs about 3 times a week as well.

  • 1, he watches maybe 10 min every other week (not including football which is on every Sunday!). He has not much interest, although he loves the theme song to doc mcstuffins! 2, never really... I rarely eat junk food, if I do it's like a cider donut or a muffin maybe a few times a month, and I'll give him a few bites.

  • The TV is definitely on in our house.  I need to have it for background noise.  In the mornings it is Good Morning America or if I am in a rush and need to get stuff done, I turn on PBS Kids.  To be honest unless a truck is on TV, my son could care less.

As far as junk food -we've given him a bite of ice cream here, a sip of apple cider there, but it's never been consistent.  He loves food way too much and I want to make sure that I am cementing some good eating habits before he indulges in anything too rich or fried.  We don't eat a lot of that stuff anyway, so it's not to much out of the norm for us.
