Sleeping somewhere not on me...

LO is 19 days old and she will only sleep on my chest or in my arms. She will fall asleep on me and I wait until she is OUT to move her and I get 20 minutes at best. If she's on me she'll sleep for 4 hours. I just can't sleep because I'm worried about rolling onto her. Don't get me wrong, I love the cuddles but I'd like for her to be able to sleep without me-especially since she will eventually be in daycare. My MIL has so all knowingly suggested CIO-ha, no thanks! Any other suggestions?

  • This is my little guy too. Is she gassy on her back? Grunting? Crying? What are you putting her to bed in? Have you tried swaddling?

  • Not too gassy, a few grunts and we do swaddle (although we arent the best at it) she will kick and wiggle until she gets out of it and if she can't get out she'll start to cry. Do you swaddle before you nurse? Right now I swaddle after I nurse so I don't do it too tight because I'm afraid of waking her up.
  • Following having the same issue...been sleeping with her on me all week..if you call it sleep cquse I'm so nervous

  • I feed on one side, change diaper and swaddle, then give the other side and he nurses until he passes out. Wait a few minutes and then put him in his crib to sleep.

I'm no help, because LO sleeps on me at night. She sleeps longer stretches that way, and doesn't grunt near as much.

I sleep propped up a little on a wedge pillow with pillows under both arms. I always have at least one arm on her, and the pillow keeps my arm from slipping down. I position her between my boobs so she doesn't slide one direction or the other. I only sleep with her cradled in my arm if I'm sitting up in the glider.. Otherwise I'm worried she'd slip.

ETA: you can try having her sleep on an incline, put something warm next to her back to mimic body warmth (like a bag of warm rice., just make sure it's not up near her face), put a shirt you've just worn under her (or sleep with the mattress sheet or a blanket one night, then put it under her if you're worried about a loose shirt in the crib), etc.

Same here. This is pretty much our routine too.
  • If your only fear/issue is rolling over....I suggest placing something under your side on either side of you so you do not roll. I do this with DS and we are both knocked out. Good luck!

I second this. I have a couple long body pillows that work great for this. Were always in the same spot we fell asleep in when we wake up

This exactly. When they are swaddled tightly, the position on their body stays about the same even if he isn't laying on you. So that way when you move him he doesn't feel such a shock in change if position.
Also, maybe try just laying your hands on her stomach and singing to him while he is in his own bed. That way he knows you are there, but he can get comfortable in his own bed.

  • If she keeps breaking out of a swaddle, invest in a swaddleme. They are amazing.

She broke out of one last night... each time we saw her on ultrasound, her hands were by her face- so she will squirm like crazy until she breaks her hands free, which then are by her face but she is uncomfortable because of the way the swaddle, or swaddle me, is situated under her arms/around her chest. She is quite the little houdini.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I will try some of them and see what/if anything works!
  • The woombie zips up to their neck, it's awesome. We use it after swaddling and he sleeps in a rock n' play. It is the ONLY way he'll sleep without being on us.

You might try swaddling with her hands on her chest. We started doing that with DS because he would grunt and wiggle until he got them up there and then would be awake. Our bedtime routine is change diaper, put on PJs , Swaddle and nurse.

  • Our routine is similar to PPs. Change, snot suck (he's always fighting a stuffy nose), swaddle, nurse... gently move him to the bassinet. We also put some books under the bassinet mattress to create an incline. We get 3 hours from this routine. My problem is getting him back into the bassinet after the motn feedings...
  • We swaddle under the arms because our daughter is just like yours in she always wants her hands by her face, even in the womb...
