Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Continuing to Use Bottles

When we went for LO's 12 month appointment, we were told to start doing away with her bottles. We are now down to one or two a day (first thing in the morning and/or at night). We have had a terrible time getting her to drink milk out of a sippy. She will drink juice and water, but she just pushes away a sippy with milk in it. She will not even try it. And yes, I have tried the ones that are colored. She will try one sip and then push the rest away. Not drinking enough has been causing constipation, so I called her pediatrician about it last week. I explained what was going on and she suggested to keep giving her bottles for now. I know she needs the extra fluid, but I hate to continue using bottles even if it is only once or twice a day. I was just very surprised that her pediatrician suggested it. Everyone says it's bad for their teeth, so I really don't know what to do about it.

Oh, and the volume of water and juice that she will drink out of a sippy is a low amount. She will drink out of them, but it's not enough to stop the constipation. I know that milk is not a necessity, so I tried just doing water and juice for a couple of days and that didn't help either.

Has anyone's pediatrician suggested this as well? And what was your decision?

  • Did you try a straw cup? My son did much better with those in terms of volume when he was first learning to drink out of cups. Another option is a sippy with a soft, silicone spout but if you have a chewer, they tend to wear out quickly. Nuk makes a good soft spout that my son also liked a lot when we transitioned. Now he'll drink out of anything, including a regular cup if I'm in the mood of mopping up the mess!

  • We have tried other sippys with LO and he loves the Nuk ones so I would definitely try those! We are not off bottles yet either as we have had family visiting us for the past month so the routines have been thrown off so we are waiting until we are back in a routine and hopefully by the time we go back to the pedi we will be off bottles. Our pedi didn't say to get off the bottles. I think you have until 15 months or so, so I'm not too worried about it yet.

We just introduced the straw cup a couple of days ago. It's the only kind we haven't tried yet... other than a regular cup. So far, no luck. She's figured out that she can dump the drink out, so that's what she's doing now. She will take a couple of sips, but we've only tried water so far. I wanted her to get the hang of it first. We'll see what happens.

Yea, we've tried the Nuk ones as well. She hates sippy cups with soft spouts. The only ones she will try are the hard ones. And I think you're right about the 15 months. I believe I read that on the Academy of Pediatrics website. I'm just trying to get her off of them now, because it's going to get harder and harder the longer I wait. She loves her bottles.

My son will not use a sippy cup for the life of him but uses the straw cup just fine.  There are some brands that do not dump out, even with the straw.  The name escapes me right now but they are available at Target.  They say spill proof really big on the packaging.  Good luck!

Thanks! I'll definitely look into it.

  • E is 15 months old and I have been trying for MONTHS to get her off bottles. She wouldn't drink anything but water out of sippys. It started getting really bad because she was only getting 8 oz of milk a day from her night time bottle, which we had not cut. So at her 15 month appointment the pedi said I needed to try something different. So I got transition sippys (nuk and think baby). The other big change was we started using almond milk. Its sweeter than regular milk and she loves it. The goal is to make milk in the sippys better than bottle milk. Our pedi even suggested adding a little coco if we had to. So far almond milk is working great, she took 16 oz yesterday from sippys!!
  • Avent straw cups (Walmart and Target) are spill proof.
  • Is the cup easy to suck? Try it and make sure. My son had a hard time at first with a few.. But once we found the right sippy he did great.
