Apple cider

OK so I know apples and applesauce are binding because of the pectin in them, but that apple juice does the opposite because of the sugar... Soooo what category does apple cider fall under? I've recently discovered this week that DS LOVES apple cider, but he's been majorly constipated since he's started drinking it. I'm wondering if this is merely a coincidence or if it has something to do with it. Has anyone else been giving their LO apple cider and noticed the same thing? I'm going to cut him back on it tomorrow and see if that makes any difference.

Re: Apple cider

  • Applesauce is a binder, but raw apples are not. For me cider is the same as drinking a cup of fiber. However I always get mine straight from the orchard and don't cut it with water

  • DS had some at my parents. They have a hobby orchard and make the cider themselves. We also had homemade donuts. It was a special treat. I don't know about cider being binding but I would avoid giving LO too much just based on the amount of sugar that's in it. GL!
  • Cider is not binding at all.  It is full of fiber.

I don't think this is true. Apples have some fiber, but juicing usually strips it out.

Cider is made from the entire apple, including the skins.  I could tell you another reason why I know cider is full of fiber but it is TMI ;)

  • Hmm well I've cut back and he's finally pooping. But I've been trying to add green juice and other "P" fruits to his diet so that probably helped get things moving too. Thanks guys!
