Please tell me this is normal

DD is almost 13 months old, for the last month or so her naps have been awful.  Usually she takes at least 2 naps a day that were at about 9:30am and 2pm about 1 1/2 each sometimes more sometimes less.  Lately it has only been an hour each if I'm lucky.  She sleeps great at night and sleeps through the night.  She is on WCM now and eats the foods we do, not sure if the switch to wcm and solid foods has anything to do with this. I am wondering why her naps are so short and she will not go down for them at the same times anymore.  I really want to get her back on a schedule.  Please help! TIA!!

  • We went through the same thing for the last month. Then I realized she might be transitioning to one nap only. So we pushed back her morning nap till 11, and lo and behold we got three hours out of her on the first day.

The transition is kind of hellish, TBH. Some days she's good for one long nap starting at 11 or noon, and some she desperately needs a second but won't take it. But I do see the light at the end of the tunnel, and we're on more of a schedule again now. Hang in there and GL!

  • Yeah, as pp mentioned, it may be time to transition to 1 nap.  We haven't completely yet, but there are some days he doesn't take his morning nap (when we're out and about and he's kept busy).  When he does take a morning nap, I only let him sleep about 45 min or so and I make sure he's awake by 11.  Today is a different story.  He's got an ear infection and was super cranky, so he went in for a nap at 8:50.  I'll let him sleep longer since he's sick and he went down so early.

The transition to 1 nap can take several months and can be tough.  Once you are down to 1 nap, that afternoon nap will probably start earlier and last longer.  Good luck!

  • We went through a period when her naps were all over the place... 2 if she woke up earlier, 1 if she woke up later, and she'd get tired at varying times.  I think we've finally transitioned to a consistent one nap a day.  When she started taking just one, it wasn't any longer than if she had taken a morning nap too, so that was hard.  Once she kicked the morning nap for good though, the one nap a day did get longer.

I'd try giving an early lunch and trying to hold off her nap until after the meal.  Hopefully moving to 1 will give you a good long chunk of sleep instead of having a baby who's napping inconsistently or fighting it!
  • I agree with the pps who said your dd might be transitioning to one nap a day. DD was doing the same thing when we were trying to keep her at two. Now we put her down at 12:15ish and she sleeps 2.5-3 hours pretty consistently. Every once in a while she will take a 20 minute cap nap around 9.

  • I'm in the same boat, OP. I think it's the transition, too. It totally sucks though, that it's all over the map. I'm not a super crazy schedule person but I do feel like a bit of consistency is good, so this is driving me crazy, too.

I'm trying to kind of follow her lead and pick up on patterns ( for example, I've realized that if she has less than 4 hrs in between nap and bedtime, getting her down for bed is hard), and then nudge a bit in the direction we want to go.

    GL!
  • We had an early transition to one nap (8-9 months) and yeah, sounded pretty much like this.  If she went down for a morning nap, she refused the afternoon one.  So we pushed back the morning nap and she now takes one midday nap that lasts about two hours.  We added a snack/meal in when the morning nap used to start.  Much better :)  Not always perfect, but much better.

  • I'm jealous of you ladies that get naps out of their LO's.  DD will not nap all day.  On rare days, I can actually get her down.  But even that takes CIO for 20 ish minutes. And then she'll only sleep for around 30 minutes.  She's so grumpy all day because she's so tired.  Our days are frustrating anymore.

  • Thank you so much everyone! This makes sense now! I really hope this transition does not take too long!  She actually took an hour morning nap today which always surprises when its that long.  I feel like there is something I should be doing to help her transition better/faster..but I guess I just have to wait it out and follow her cues as usual and it will work out.
