first table foods/ finger foods

Hey ladies! I need your help. DS has finally gotten the hang of self feeding using puffs so I think we are ready to move on! I think we are going to try transitioning his dinner meal first. What are some good foods your lo has had success with? TIA!

Re: first table foods/ finger foods

  • Banana, avocado, sweet potatoes and berries were the first "easier" foods, but we gave her whatever we were eating. Don't overthink it - just make sure it's soft enough to gum :)

  • Plain noodles, soft cheese, small pieces of soft fruit, bits of bread, crackers. As long as it's small & not too hard. Just stay close by & stick to 1 new food at a time in case there is a reaction.

  • Banana, Avocado, Sweet Potato, Noodles.  The way I test food to make sure it's soft enough is put a small piece of food in my mouth and if I can smooch it between my tongue and the roof of my mouth then DS should be able to gum it.
  • DS loves steamed apples and pears with the skins on. I pre-cut them into hand hold-able slices, steam them till they're just this side of apple sauce and let him feed himself. It's not a purée but soft tonight for him to gum.
  • Whatever we eat just cut into small pieces. Pasta is a favorite. Crackers and cheese.

That is exactly the same way I test DS's food as well.  I figure if I can mash it with my tongue, he can mash it with his gums.

We went back and forth b/w avocado and banana with DS's first foods.  They're soft and nutritious (though sticky lol).  As we started to add more solid food (like chicken, veggies, pasta, etc) we just always made sure the pieces were small enough that if he swallowed them whole, he wouldn't choke on them.  This was for ease of eating as well as my peace of mind, because I was a nervous wreck when he first started eating solids.

  • DD likes lentils a lot, they're a good size for her to feed herself.
