What's your nighttime routine?

Just curious how you do night time feedings - when do u chance diaper, how do you keep LO awake, who does what?

I try to get in bed as soon as the 830/930 feeding is over. Hubby will burp LO and put her down and if he is up for the next feeding he will hangs her diaper and undress her before waking me. If not, I pray I don't sleep through my alarm. For each subsequent feeding I usually undress and prep her and once she is fed ill wake up DH to burp, diaper and dress her before rocking her to sleep. DH is returning to work this coming week and I'm not sure how I'm going to survive the middle of the night (3am/4am feeding) without his help. Usually once she is fed, diapered and changed and finally rocked back to sleep I will have only 60-90min until the next feed - if I don't oversleep my alarm and LO doesn't wake me.

I'm feeling pretty sleep deprived and this is with hubby being home. Hoping I survive next week.

Re: What's your nighttime routine?

  • DS and I have gotten into a pretty good routine. When he wakes up I change his diaper and then feed him. We no longer do skin to skin (at night time feedings, he's great about staying awake to eat!) And after I burp him, he goes right back into the bassinet and will fall asleep. We've had nights where I stay awake to rock him if he's grouchy or not feeling well. It's exhausting, but I know he's not always going to need me like this so I'm trying to think of it that way.

  • Is there a reason you are setting an alarm to feed that often at night? During the day I wake her to feed every 2-3 hours, or feed on demand, but at night I just let her tell me when she is ready which is usually a good 4 hour stretch. I've never had to set an alarm for her, I just hear her stirring.

My husband will change her on the last feeding before we sleep. I rock her to sleep. Then I wake up with her 4 hours or so later feed her, change her, rock her, then resume when she wakes up the next time. My husband went back to work on Wednesday and we have been doing just fine with night times on our own! He told me to feel free to wake him over the weekend night time feedings but I haven't felt the need.

Our pedi suggested we keep the 2.5-3hrs between feeds (from start time to start time) until she gets back up to birth weight. I def don't like waking a sleeping baby. She was only 2oz from BW on Wednesday and her next apt is this coming Wednesday. I'm happy to let her wake me but am waiting to get the "ok" ... Although ill admit I've gone the 4 hr stretch by complete accident and she didn't even fuss.

  • It's not hard keeping DS awake. He loves feeding time. Usually the formula is still chilly from being in the fridge. DH does the midnight feeding. DS is pretty consistent by waking up at 3am and 6:30am. I do the 3am feeding. During the week, I also do the 6:30. On the weekend, DH does that one. After feeding is pretty much the same. Burp, rock, change diaper, rock some more, then lay in crib.
