Well I live in Alabama but when my daughter was born, I left her father's name blank on the birth certificate. For him to have his name on it, he would have actually had to be there and sign it himself, which of course wasn't going to happen. So yes, if he's not there to sign for it, it will just be left blank

As a Masshole, I can let you know that you can give a name, although it isnt signed, it will be noted. It makes things so much easier when you go for child support. Good luck! (This was an issue my best friend had when filing her baby's birth certificate!)
