Help me figure out what I want to be when I grow up

So I am going to start looking for a new job at the new year.  But I have no idea what I want to do!  I have a BS in Journalism and an MBA (Business Admin), 6 years in marketing and 2.5 years in business development experience.

I need to be around people (hate paperwork), I enjoy customer service, reading, puzzles, winning competitions (especially trivia), animals (but I am allergic), and my own child (but really no one else's).

OK help me find my dream job!

Re: Help me figure out what I want to be when I grow up

  • I have a MA in journalism, and after I was a newspaper editor I became a teacher. I LOVED it and will go back when DD and futurechild is in school.

I incorporated a lot of my writing experience in the classroom, I made super-fantastic handouts and powerpoints from all of my editing experience, and there's nothing like being in a room with 28 kids all day when it comes to customer service.

  • I'm a teacher too, and I also really love it, although I am not teaching in the classroom right now while DS is still in preschool.  I am doing private tutoring now, which is a pretty good part time gig -- lucrative, too!

I teach middle school and high school English.  My B.A. is in English, but my M.A. is in teaching.  I was going to go to law school -- whew! dodged that bullet!

A book that really helped me was What Color Is Your Parachute?  It uses the Myers-Briggs Personality Type to help determine good careers.

    Do you know your MBPT?

  • Yeah I have the parachute book.  My myers Brigg - I am an extrovert, sensing, feeling, perceiving.  If I remember correctly.

I would love to teach - but i want to be a college prof.  I just don't want to go back for my doctorate (yet).  I would love to be a women's studies professor one day.

  • Hell, I have absolutely NO CLUE what I want to be when I grow up. I can't even figure out what to study for my Masters.
  • Sales rep for a children's clothing company!
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this.  Lately, I've thought about applying to medical school, working at a doctor's office in administration, working at Babies R Us, opening my own business, and returning to teach.  I have a Bachelor's in Marketing and was licensed to teach 3 years ago.  I only had the chance to do it for a little while and then we moved out here.  I then decided to just not work for a while and once DD came....well, there went that.  So, I'm all over the place right now.  Good thing I have time to decide.

And so do you.  I think the Meyers-Briggs Personality Test would be a good way for you to figure it out.  You can google it and take the test online.  GL!
