Tips for pumping

My LO is 1wk 2 days old and I've decided I need to start pumping in preparation for a rehearsal/wedding I am in 2wks from today. I probably would need to have enough for up go 5-6 feedings I know little about pumping (ie. best to do after AM feeding - and that's basically it). Was wondering if anyone has any tips they would like to share.

I assume once I start pumping each day I need to continue to keep the supply up, right?

  • Label day and night when you pump and store.

  • Pump the smallest amount you can each day to add up to the right amount for the event, unless you plan to continue that same amount indefinitely.  Last time around I set myself up for wicked oversupply by pumping too much right off the bat.

  • The way I read your post, I hope you realize you'll be needing to pump/nurse the same amount during this event as you normally do. Otherwise you are going to be a soaking mess.

Yes - I plan to pump during the wedding when I would normally be feeding.

  • In 2 weeks your baby will be 3 weeks old. There is a growth spurt at 3 weeks. is there anyway to bring baby and nurse instead of pumping or can you cut down the time you are needed in case baby is going through the growth spurt?

otherwise, you shouldn't need too much pumped milk for a 3 week old. I would just pump a little at a time until you get what you need. You don't want to set yourself up for oversupply. The rule is 1 oz an hour, but I;m not sure at what age that starts. I don't know if that is too much milk for a 3 week old.

My mom has offered to drive my daughter to the venue for one or two feedings but I know it may not be 100% realistic. My friend is a bit of a brideZilla and I'm really not sure how things are going to play out. The wedding is with my sorority sisters and I can clearly say as happy as they are for me they have no idea what b/f entails and how much of a priority it is. I was already told if I want to bring her to the rehearsal dinner I have to make sure she is quiet the whole time ... Yay - like that's reasonable.

  • I was told at two weeks to start pumping once a day. I was told I wouldn't get much at first, but this way you don't produce too much.

  • Wow. I would just nurse my baby. Bridezilla and sisters can suck it. I don't care if they don't "get it." I would bring the baby and a support person. What the hell is this day long rehearsal event anyway? I've never heard of that. (40weeks tomorrow - no patience here for BS.)
  • I just went to a wedding last night, & there's no way I would have brought DS. Way too many nosy drunk people during cold & flu season. I have been pumping since the beginning though, since he was in NICU for a week & I have class once a week.
Either way I was gone from 2-11pm for the wedding. He only drank 2-2.5 oz bottles. He was obviously waiting for me. I also only pumped once while I was there.
Does he nurse both sides every feeding? If not, then pump after the first feeding in the morning. After you get your first bottle's worth you should probably start practicing with him drinking from a bottle. When he gets that bottle, you should pump again. I usually get enough for two feedings when I pump.
