Fortifying breast milk with neosure

I am EPing and have been told to fortify my milk with neosure formula...has anyone else been told to do this? They said if I were nursing to not worry about it but since I am pumping and bottle feeding they recommend it..so confused as to what the difference is. Also my LO has been extra gassy and poop seems more runny than usual...could this be the neosure?

Re: Fortifying breast milk with neosure

  • We use enfamil enfacare. We are to give our LO bottles with my BM supplemented with the enfacare for 3 bottles a day at 2oz each and she can BF for the rest. This is until her neo and pedi agree her weight gain is steady and then she can be EBF. She does have some gas/fussiness with the enfacare. I think any of the supplements tend to do that to the LOs with all the extra vitamins and caleries in it. Maybe it will just be a temporary add! Hope it gets better!

  • We fortified for a while. I'm not anti-formula at all (my two boys were completely formula fed) but I stopped the Neosure as soon as she latched. Formula does change consistency of BMs. They just want the baby to have the extra calories - I fortified from the beginning of April (in the Nicu when I was pumping) until the middle of June when she started breastfeeding.

  • I didn't know there was a generic equivalent of Neosure. Where is that sold?

  • We switched from neocate to enfacare and it's been so much better! She seems less gassy and uncomfortable since the switch.
  • We've been fortifying with Neosure since the girls were discharge from the NICU (prior to that, they used HMF, instead) to get up to a 22cal recipe.

We had a little trouble with the girls adjusting to the introduction of the Neosure -- more constipation than anything. DD1 didn't poop for over two weeks at first (but she wasn't uncomfortable or distressed, so we let it ride its course).

We recently started needing to supplement for the girls, as well -- so they get anywhere from 3-6oz of straight formula a day, too (which we mix in with the BM - since they refuse to drink it straight). In any case, that has caused their stools to become even more solid -- but, again, they're still going relatively regularly, eating normally, and don't seem distressed about it....

  • Like the others said, it's normal to do this for weight gain. Anna has a milk protein intolerance so they fortified with prolacta (made from human milk) until she got to a good weight. I suppose the difference is that with the pump, it's really hard to completely empty the breast and get the really fatty milk out. Anna is MUCH more efficient than the pump.

They mean that nursing is more important, so if you were nursing they wouldn't worry about it and let you nurse.  Since you are pumping and bottle feeding anyway, you might as well fortify the milk to give him the extra boost.

We fortify my pumped milk with Enfacare for most of his bottles and also do one bottle with Poly-vi-sol and one with iron each day.  It gives him the 22 calories vs the normal 20 that breastmilk is on average.  If he ever starts nursing well, we'll let him nurse and not worry about the lower calories since he is gaining weight well now.

  • Normal for weight gain. In the SCN my girls were on fortified pumped milk mixed with high cal formula. When they came home, DD1 was on half pumped milk half high cal formula till I ran out of the formula then I made high cal breast milk. DD2 was just on straight pumped milk.

  • I pumped and without even asking me the NICU added it to my milk. We were sent home & ordered to add it to at least one bottle a day. My motherly instinct was really against it. Our Son was 3 months old when I found out I was right. Our DS is allergic to SOY! A primary ingredient in all formulas. He was very gassy, always had the runs & reflux. Once I stopped eating it, and stopped the formula bulking, he became very healthy & grew a ton!!
I say follow your instinct. If you're uneasy, say NO to it.
  • We also used human milk fortifier in the nicu. Plus the poly-vi-sol with iron until he turns 6 months. Once he was discharged, we switched to plain bm and he gained weight like a champ. We didn't start using neosure until at about 2 months just to increase the feed time, he was wanting to eat every hour or so. It worked well and leveled him out to 2.5-3 hour feedings. Be sure to always ask questions until you understand why they're doing what they're doing in the NICU. Ours was really good at explaining but got to where they didn't say unless we asked.
