Another ? on Braxton Hicks

So I am 32+2 and at my last appointment my Dr asked me if I've had any contractions. I told her no, I didn't think so to which she responded, "Well then you definitely haven't. You would KNOW if you had."

My question is... Is there anyone else out there who hasn't experienced BH up to this point? Or if you have, do you know for sure you're having a contraction? FTM, so no idea over here. I definitely have random discomfort in the uterus, but wouldn't know what to call a contraction (if that makes sense)... Wondering if I haven't had any BH up to this point indicates that I'll go past my due date...

Thanks ladies!

Re: Another ? on Braxton Hicks

  • I was told BH contractions aren't painful. FTM too, and I'm pretty sure I've had them because part or all of my uterus gets rock hard. Ironically, this happens most often when LO kicks incessantly in one area and basically causes them herself.

  • The bh that I've gotten just feel weird. I notice them sometimes just because it's a weird sensation, but I just kinda poke my stomach and realize it's very hard all over and realize it's just bh. It is very likely that you have had bh and not known. I'm a FTM, but I wouldn't think that bh would affect your due date at all.

The first time I was in the hospital the nurse asked me how I knew they were contractions and I said beside they were painful as hell and she said well BH can be painful to you know. So I don't know but I do have random contractions, I had a couple while walking around superstore the other day with my mom and people were jut looking at me funny because I had a weird look on my face

  • I haven't had any BH yet, and I regularly get NSTs. As far as I know it's when your tummy gets hard all over. This is my 2nd pregnancy too. I'm sure even though I have NSTs I could have them when I'm not being tested, but I don't think I have. I wouldn't stress too much about it.
  • My BHs are always low and feel like RLP but last longer, usually around 30 seconds. They are also rock hard and come in usually if I have been sitting for a while then get up and decide to move. They state you never want more then 4 in a hour so watch for that.

  • With my first I never felt anything until I was in labor. But at 38w I was 1cm and when induced when I was overdue I was 2-3, so obviously I was having some. I am surprised your OB said that. With my 2nd and this one, I feel em all the damn time!

  • I didn't know that was happening to me until it happend while the midwife was measuring me.  I think it's crazy that your dr. told you that you would know if it happened... Now that I regcognize that feeling as BH I know I get them all the time.
  • I never knew with my first! I don't remember many, this time I have them all the time. They don't hurt all of the sudden your tummy gets hard for a few seconds! Just feel with your hands.
  • Not true. As PP said you can have contractions without feeling them. DS was born at 32 weeks, I was fully dilated and never felt a contraction until my water broke.
  • I'm also 32 weeks and was wondering the same thing! Also a FTM - and haven't had any that I'm aware of, but I mentioned having an achey belly to one of my friends ( I was attributing it to stretching out and growing pains) ... And she said- are you having contractions? I didn't know. I felt my tummy and it felt a little hard but I wasn't sure if it was more hard than usual. So who knows! Is it a bad sign if we have not had them yet??
  • I didn't feel a single BH contraction with my first. When I did start having contractions at 38w3d I had no idea. I thought I was having intestinal cramping until my mom felt my belly and told me I was having contractions. So no you don't KNOW you are are having a contraction especially being a first time mom.

  • I didn't have BH with my first child! When I went in the morning of my induction the nurse asked if I had experienced any contractions and I told her no. At this point I was hooked up to the fetal monitor so she asked me again and I responded no. She then looked at me and said "really? You are having one right now!"

So as a FTM I didn't experience them... Second time is a whole different ball game!
  • To my knowledge, I haven't had any so you aren't alone. I do get some rock solid spots once in a while but I think it's just LO hanging out. The pain I do have like upper rib pain is usually fairly constant and I've discussed with my OB.

  • I also have not knowingly felt any and am a FTM. Thanks for asking op, doesn't seem like it's uncommon :-)

  • I didn't have any BH with my first and he was born at 38 weeks. Most BH just feel like your tummy tightening(it will be hard to the touch) and they usually aren't painful.

  • I can't tell.  I don't know if she's pushing up stretching out or if its a contraction.  I know that it takes my breath away and it doesn't last very long.
  • During a BH or regular contraction you whole belly will be tight, not just where baby is and it doesn't feel the same as a kick. You won't feel the baby moving during a contraction. Mine usually take my breathe away a little, though they do not hurt.

  • Just adding that I usually only notice the BH revving up because they smush my bladder and all of a sudden I think I HAVE TO PEE!!!!! NOW!!!! But getting up with a rock hard tummy is not pleasant. It's a very tricky moment lol.

Exactly this. I also realized last night that I get more BH when I have gas or have to poo. I can say that I've had a ton of BH, but no idea about the contractions. When I was in the hospital a month or so ago, I had a 45 second contraction and had no idea it was happening. So who knows how many I've actually had, since apparently I don't feel them. I've honestly been a little freaked out since then, because of not being able to feel them.

  • I don't remember feeling anything with my first until I went into labor but I am thinking I just really didn't know what to look for. (My doctor says that is common with FTMs.) And I never felt any contraction any more painful than the BH I have this time before I had my epidural.
