September 2013 Moms

The Past 24 Hours of Your Life

The activity level post got me thinking about routines and what we actually do during each part of the day. I feel like I spend most of my day trying to get the baby to sleep, so I am very curious as to how much time other new moms are spending feeding, rocking, playing, etc. with their babies.

For me every day is a bit different, so rather than describing a vague "typical" day, I'd love to see a breakdown of what you did in the last 24 hours. Obviously times will be approximate, but hopefully this will give us a sense of the different ways we are all handling newborn care and getting things done.

Here's mine:

Re: The Past 24 Hours of Your Life

  • 8pm shower
    8:45pm nurse baby
2am baby finally falls asleep. Put her down and go to bed. Changed her diaper twice in this time span as well
3:30am baby wakes to feed again. Change diaper first. Doze off holding baby
    5am put baby in bassinet
    7:30 baby wakes to feed
8am decide to sleep in bed with her
9:30 wake up to brush my teeth and use bathroom before baby wakes. Wash bottles and warm up oatmeal

11am put baby down only for her to wake again and need more nursing. So nurse and eat cold oatmeal.
11:30am change diaper and clothes, tummy time
12:00 walk to grocery store for Red box, then walk around the neighborhood with baby in the carrier
1:00 get home and start prepping dinner while baby sleeps in carrier

2:30pm put her down in vibrating chair then go to browse internet
    3:00 finish dinner prep

6:30 pass dd to dh and start dinner
    7:00 nurse dd
    7:15 finish dinner
    7:30 nurse while eating dinner

  • 6pm: Watched Seahawks game with DH while feeding son/trying to take pictures of him in his cute onesie.

7pm: Naked tummy time for little man

    8pm:Diaper change/cuddle time

8:30pm: Fed DS, then watched Netflix and texted my mom until next feeding

10pm: Changed/fed DS again, bed for all of us

1:30am: Change/fed DS, ate a bowl of cereal after he fell asleep

2:30am: I went back to sleep

    6am: Fed DS in bed

6:45am: Back to sleep for both of us

9:15am: DS started stirring, I kept sleeping after giving him his paci

9:45am: DS up for real, changed and fed him

    10:15am: DS fell asleep again

11:30am: DS is awake, changed and fed him, then had a good 40 minutes or so of nakey (for him) cuddle time

12:30pm: Got DS dressed, he fell asleep again, I had awhile to check facebook, read, straighten the house

1:30pm: I was hungry for lunch but DS needed to eat again

2:15pm: Finally got to eat my lunch while DS slept some more

4pm: DS woke up, I fed him

4:20pm: DH comes home and works on some business stuff while DS slept more

5pm: DS still sleeping, DH and I change DS and head to the grocery store

5:45: We just arrived home, DS slept for another ten minutes or so and is now waking up, I'm assuming he's ready to eat any minute.

That's my best guess, I know I could be off a little on times, but that's about how it goes. DS has slept sooo much today it's insane. Also, I probably didn't include every diaper change in there... don't judge me for not changing my kid enough ;) They just all blur together after awhile!

  • I have no fucking idea. I feed him, "play" with him, change his diaper and let him nap but I could not even pretend to say I knew what time these things happened. He did have his first shots today and his appointment was at 10am but that's all I could account for. Am I supposed to know these things?
The only reason I have any clue what time things happen is because I record her feeding sessions on an app on my iphone. Then I just guessed at the times for everything in between. [:P] Also, today the least fussy/most organized day that we've had in a while!

Your quarterback is from my town.

  • Why so much floor sleeping?

We had a productive day- cleaned the house, did laundry, got a proposal and a conference call done for work, went to Trader Joe's, cooked dinner. LO got tummy time and a walk and we did a lot of BFing. Also got some thank you cards for random gifts we've gotten this week out.

    Why so much floor sleeping?

Because she usually doesn't sleep as well as she did that night, and she requires some seriously loud white noise to sleep in her crib for more than a few minutes at a time.

We tried sleeping with her in our room and we tried sleeping with her in the nursery while we were both in our room, and neither of us got any sleep with those options. I'm not willing to leave the hair dryer running when I'm not in her room, for safety and because I wouldn't be able to hear her cry.

We found what works for us is taking shifts. My husband takes 9pm-3am (but brings her to me in bed when she needs to nurse) and I take 3am-8am, keeping her away from the bedroom so the other one of us can really sleep. When I am able to get her down on my shift, I catch some extra sleep on the nursery floor.

can you get a white noise maker or an app instead of using the hair dryer?

I do have a pretty good app that makes hair dryer noises, but sometimes it's just not loud enough. I also have the Sleep Sheep and the My Baby Soundspa, but both are waaaay too quiet for night time sleeping.
