Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Milk Alternative question

I will be talking to my pediatrician about this in 2 weeks, but would love real life mom advice as well. My son had a pretty bad intolerance to milk when he was born. I won't say true allergy, but a definite intolerance. BF did not work, we went through a variety of formula fails as well. Finally it seemed he had grown out of it a little and is doing ok on gerber formula. He will be a year old next week, and we tried an ounce of whole milk mixed with his bottle last weekend to see if he would even notice the taste, etc. He spit up immediately after the bottle. Not just a little spit up (and he hasn't spit up in a couple months) but at least an ounce or 2 of milk. I haven't tried since and am now nervous he still has an issue with the milk protein.
Google is not much help obviously, so what are some alternatives that have worked for everyone just in case we have to go down that route? Thanks in advance!

  • No milk allergies here but DH & I use almond milk in cooking/drinking/etc. so that's what I naturally put LO on at 1 year (after getting doc ok). I worry about all hormones in regular milk. Doc said as long as LO not allergic to nuts almond milk is fine. It actually has more calcium than cows milk. Less fat but I Just make sure full fat yogurt, avocado, pb etc are in her diet.

  • We had to switch our son to soy milk. Finally all the gas, bloating and diaper rash disappeared.

  • We use almond milk.  LO had MSPI and even though she has outgrown it I don't feel comfortable give her WCM all the time.  Our pedi recommended almond, soy, or coconut milk.
  • We do have an allergy issue. He's been on allimentum for a while. We are still using allimentum and have started using rice milk with his meals and offering water. The pedi wanted him to try rice milk first and then maybe eventually try some whole milk later.

  • If I were to give my LO a milk alternative, I would use either almond or coconut or a combination of the two, or just not give milk at all.  Too much soy can be harmful due to its estrogenic properties, and rice milk has little nutritional value and may have arsenic contamination, which is fine for eating rice occasionally but bad if you're drinking a lot of it daily.
    All of this exactly.

Milk isn't as necessary for proper nutrition as the dairy board and USDA would like everyone to believe. I buy milk for DD because she likes it, but if she didn't or was allergic I would pretty much never have it in the house.

  • DD had multiple food protein intolerance and was on elemental formula.  GI told us to wait until 18 months to try any dairy.  I continued giving her formula.  She wouldn't drink it from a cup, so I gave her bottles before naps and bedtime.  She slowly weaned herself to just a bedtime bottle, and we got rid of that earlier this week.  She drinks plenty of water and eats tons of different foods.  I may look for a vitamin supplement for calcium and vitamin D, otherwise I am not worried.

This for us exactly. My lo's have done great on the almond milk.

Our DD has a milk allergy and we use coconut milk. We tried goats milk but that bothered her as well. Doc recommended soy milk but I was uncomfortable with all the estrogen.

  • DS is very allergic to dairy.  After he turned 1, we switched to Similac Go & Grow Soy toddler formula.  He's 21 months now and is down to one bottle of it a day, at night (he's had medical issues, so we've been slower to wean).  DS gets the overwhelming majority of his calories and nutrition from food now, but we found that formula to be helpful for the switch.
