We're on probably his 3rd or 4th week and he LOVES it! He is so excited to get dropped off and start playing with the toys and the other kids. But he's not napping there like he does at home. I believe it's b/c he's just too excited to sleep. But by now he should be used to being there, right? Unfortunately, he's only slept a full 45 minutes there on two occasions. Most of the time, he only sleeps about 20 minutes. When he gets home, he's overtired and has started crying and being difficult to put down. Any suggestions on how to get him to nap better at DC? Should I ask for a dark, quiet place away from the other kids? Should I have them just put him down for 30 minutes at 2:30pm everyday (even if he doesn't sleep) just to get him into a routine? Should I wake him up early from his 2-hour nap that he takes every morning (although I hate to do that - he's usually quite the mess if he doesn't get that nap in)?
Could the problem be totally unrelated to daycare? My husband and I have vastly different ways of putting him down and usually have trouble getting him to go to bed at night when we're both home. Could that be it? Could it just be that he's getting older and into that fussy toddler stuff?
When he's not at DC, we really don't have a lot of issues with his naps. He goes down very easily for his morning nap (usually 9-11) about 95% of the time. On Sunday and Monday, he'll go down easily for a nap in the afternoon - sometimes 2 short naps - about 90% of the time. Saturdays are our fun day, so usually he catches some zzz's in the car at some point. Or once we get home, he'll pass out for an hour or more. FYI: he's only in DC Tues-Fri 12:30 to 5:30.
Suggestions or insight anyone?
Re: 10 month old not sleeping at daycare
Usually around the age of one, most DC's go down to one nap a day mid day after lunch (ie: 12-2p). All of the children nap at the same time and lights are out. So the good news that is only a few months away. You may want to inquire about the next classroom nap time/lunch and adjust the time dropped off accordingly.
There are a lot of distractions at DC and it sounds like your LO is loving it and doesn't want to miss out on anything forcing himself to stay awake. Eventually, he will. My suggestion is to get him on the same schedule daily as far as waking up, naps, bedtimes and meals. It will make things smoother. And yes, he can have quiet time if he doesn't sleep just to get into the routine.
GL, it will get better!
