Those who had breech babies

My DD is 3 weeks old now and was breech.  I have read that it is recommended for breech babies to get an ultrasound of their hips around 6 weeks...  especially if they are female and the first baby.  I have expressed this to her pediatrician twice now and they aren't willing to refer her for the ultrasound because "her hips aren't clicking."  So my question is, are your pediatricians recommending the ultrasound?  I am considering switching doctors because of this and I want to get an idea if I am overreacting.

Re: Those who had breech babies

  • DS is scheduled for his ultrasound in a few weeks since he was born breech. My hospital requires it, but the pediatricians said i should have nothing to worry about since his hips aren't clicking. If you are truly worried, I would recommend looking for a new doc. There are huge complications down the road if hip dysplacia goes untreated.

  • My DD3 was breech and we never had an ultrasound and she is fine. But I feel that if you are concerned you should pursue it, even if that means with a different doctor. This incident alone will create a level of distrust for you in their care and you certainly don't want that.
  • We did have an ultrasound for our LO but her left hip was clicking. Everything was finethough. It sounds like your ped has no reason to suspect anything, but get a second opinion if you arent happy.
  • DD had her ultrasound this afternoon. Out doctor said it's more common for girls to have issues. If I was you, I would look for a second opinion.

  • DD will be 13 weeks at her ultrasound (the soonest we could get in). Our pediatrician mentioned it at our initial appointment when she was four days old. We've been to the pediatrician numerous times for weight gain and they've only felt her left hip click once.

  • My DD was breech, born this July. Pedi felt no clicking and felt confident there were no issues, but their office does an U/S anytime the baby is breech. I'd get a second opinion if I were you

  • My first was breech and had no clicking but they did the u/s anyway just to be sure. I agree with the other posts...if you are concerned then push it. GL!

  • DD was breech and we had an ultrasound, however, her hip did click. If you feel it's necessary to get an ultrasound, I agree with OPPs, get a new doctor. You don't want a doctor that won't listen to you!
  • DD was breech and we have an ultrasound scheduled when she is 6 weeks.

  • Thanks for the responses.  As a side note, my mom works at a pediatric clinic and I plan to take DD there to get a referral if I need to.  I have decided to look for another pediatrician because I just don't trust that they are thorough enough at this place, especially after reading these responses.

  • My daughter had several u/s on her hips, but she was partially frank breech. I wouldn't have had hers checked otherwise. I would if the Dr had suspicions or I was uncomfortable. My daughter is and was perfectly fine. The specialist went more on the movements and feeling I the motions at the visit than the u/s. You know what's best for your kid
  • DD was breech and we had an ultrasound done at 6 weeks. There was never any clicking, but our pedi brought it up in the hospital and scheduled it at her 2 week growth check. Her results were normal, but I'm glad we had it done. I'd definitely get a new pedi if I were you.

  • DD is 9 weeks and had an ultrasound at 4 weeks. Her ultrasound was scheduled by the nurse before we left the hospital (I delivered at Kaiser). I would be persistent....

  • Thanks for the responses.  I saw a different doctor yesterday and she immediately gave me the referral.  DD is going to get her ultrasound next week.

  • My DD is 2 months now and even though she was breech she was never scheduled an US because they didn't hear any clicking at her 1 week appointment or 6 week. But after reading all these comments maybe I should push getting one!

  • My DS was breech. He is 10 weeks now and an ultrasound was never recommended .
  • My daughter was partially Frank breech.  We were referred to have an u/s and monthly checks by a specialist.  U/S was completely fine, and no clicking.  She is 9 now, and you would never know there was a concern for her hips at any time.  Pedi checked her at 2 weeks.  She said my daughter was fine, but would like to rule out any possibilities (especially since she had one leg up). Our hospital and Pedi's say it's only necessary if they hear clicking, feel something odd in the movement, or are Frank breech.  I would just get a second opinion.  It may not be necessary.
  • WOW!  Now I know I'm sleep deprived!  Just realized I posted a reply earlier..... Yea, me!  Sorry...   I-)
