Babies: 3 - 6 Months

ZANTAC

After numerous weeks of switching formula, bottles, nipples, adding rice, and much love the pedi wants to start our BB on Zantac. He is spitting up more than what I would consider to be normal. Numerous times after eating with considerable amounts. Although he is gaining weight, he is so miserable after eating. He moans and groans and cries.... to me- sounds of pain.

I hate seeing him this way but do not feel 100% at ease about giving my baby medicine this early in life. Are there any mommies out there who have had their babies on medicine for reflux? What would you tell me....good or bad????

Re: ZANTAC

  • DS has been on Zantac since he was about two weeks old.  After eating, he would scream, arch his back, and spit up.  I didn't want to see him on meds either, but it made a huge difference!  I actually missed a dose for the very first time last week and all the symptoms reappeared.

  • We've been on two different meds for reflux. I had no issues putting him on it. He was in pain and it was so bad it caused inflammation in his throat that caused his ear tubes to be swollen shut causing a bad ear infection. A squirt of medicine 2x a day is worth not seeing my little man in pain.
  • My daughter is 7months now but has been on zantac since about 6weeks.  She was screaming in pain, arching her back and all out freaking when you tried to burp her...not to mention all the times she woke me up choking on spit up.  She could projectile spit up clearing 4-6 feet out her mouth and nose.

Zantac helped wonders and she is a completely different kid on it.  She is her usual laid back, calm happy self again.  When she outgrows her dose the above symptoms quickly return.

We were switched to prevacid by the specialist but I switched her back to Zantac after just over a week as the Prevacid made her a lethargic, spaced out, not in this world kid and she completely stopped smiling and I hated seeing her like that.  Zantac has worked wonders we had to increase the dose every 2weeks in the early months but she now has been on this dose for about 6 weeks.

Personally if a baby is gaining weight and is happy then I don't think it matters how much they spit up.  If they are losing weight or are screaming in pain (refusing to eat etc) then I have no reservation about trying the meds.  How uncomfortable is your baby after feeds?  Is it a drastic difference than how he is most of the time otherwise?  Moaning and groaning can be a normal baby thing.  Being grumpy after a feed can be normal as well.  But the symptoms are usually pretty clear...arching back in pain, forceful projectile spit up, choking on spit up, waking screaming in pain then passing back out right away.

  • My six wk old has been on it since he was four wks old. Felt just like you but he is doing better on it.
  • One of my boys has been on Zantac since about 2 months. He screamed all the time and was clearly in pain. Zantac helped immensely.

My other boy is a happy spitter. He pukes a lot, but since he's not in pain, no meds for him.

  • Zantac works miracles. Both my twins are on it. They were both gaining fine but had other symptoms. DS2 eventually went from Zantac to Prevacid which is much stronger. Do a trial... If baby improves continue treatment.
