Postpartum doula?

My mom will be spending time with us after the twins are born (not overnight), but a friend of mine recommended hiring a postpartum doula as well, especially since my toddler will be running around (in other words my mom and I might just have our hands full of kids the whole time!).

Has anyone else hired a postpartum doula? Was it worth it? What sorts of things did you ask her to do for you? (Laundry, housework, meals ...?) I am getting ready to set up a phone interview with one and am realizing that I'm relatively clueless.

ETA: This might sound like a silly thing to worry about, but I am something of an introvert and am worried that having a non-family member around so soon after bringing the twins home might be tiring even if she is a lot of help ... is that weird??

Re: Postpartum doula?

  • My boss who had twins 4 years ago had a night nanny to help at night. From what I remember, she would bring the twins to mom to nurse and then go put them back to bed, and then would do some light housework/laundry downstairs. We are seriously considering something similar. Or some kind of extra help during the daytime (even though my mom will be around regularly). Honestly, if you can afford it, I think extra help is never a bad thing.

I had PPD after my daughter was born and it was a struggle for me to keep up with everyhting when she was nursing round the clock...I regret not getting one with her...but now with twins, we definitely are.

  • I think when you interview people (phone screen first, then interview in person) if you think you'll be okay with them in your home. Trust your gut...even if you are introverted, you could probably find the right person.

  • I had one who specialized in working with MOM's and it was amazing. She would come for 3-4 hours at a time and she would just do whatever was most helpful. Usually that meant that she would take care of the babies while I got caught up on housework, went out for a walk or took a shower. She always somehow managed to wash all the bottles, clean out my fridge and make me something delicious out of whatever was in our pantry. She also gave me lots of great tips on logistics of dealing with 2 at once. I highly recommend!

As far as the introvert thing, I worried about the same thing, but by the time my twins were here I  had lost all of my inhibitions - I used to joke about asking the UPS guy, or the random strangers taking cans from our recycling bin to watch the babies so I could have a break. Trust me - you will welcome the help!
