NBR: Environmental issue - topic selection

I'm turning to you ladies for help because my own pregnancy brain is numb and highly uncreative right now. I'm working on a project for my Human Uses of the Environment course (yep, still workin' on that Bachelor's degree...there's light at the end of the tunnel). I'm not an environmental studies major, so I'm a bit confused as to why this course was required. I digress. Any suggestions for an environmental issue (preferably controversial) research topic?

  • How about the Canadian tar sands and the proposed Keystone XL pipeline?

  • Fracking? I know that has been a hot button topic lately.

Forest thinning vs. letting fires thin forest and the effect on Carbon emission. I listen to OPB (Oregon public broadcasting) and they had a really interesting piece on this the other day. here is a link:

Edit to add: If you are looking for other ideas Earth Fix has a lot of great articles on this type of stuff and OPB is pretty good about giving unbiased information!

  • Awesome suggestions, ladies! Thank you so much. This is not my area, and my mind went completely blank. All I could think of were oil spills, and that was not going to work for the perimeters of this assignment.

I'll do some research on each of the suggestions and pick a topic this weekend. Thanks again for the input :)

  • Yup, I agree with PPs -- hydro fracking is definitely a hot button issue. That's the one I would pick, personally.

But the forest thinning topic sounds very interesting too.
