is anyone else still have sleep issues?? help!

ds used to be a great sleeper, now? not so much. its killing me! yesterday: woke up at 7:30, napped from 10:30am - 11:45am (in the car). He is too nosy and busy to get him down for an afternoon nap. he fights it tooth and nail. bedtime is 7:30 pm. last night he woke up three times between 7:30 and 10:30pm. my pediatrician told me to go in and have limited contact with him, lay him back down and rub his back. it doesnt work. the minute i lay him back down, he pops up screaming. i picked him up and he was arching his back and cry/screaming. finally got him calmed down, he fell asleep. this happened three times before 10:30. Fast forward to 1:30 am. ds wakes up. i go in, lay him back down and rub his back. again, pops right back up crying. like i cant even get him to lay down long enough to calm him down. i decide im going to let him cry it out. he cries/screams so loudly for 30 minutes that he wakes up DD (who has school in the am). I go and pick him up because now they are both crying. finally get dd back to bed and asleep. put ds in his crib (at this point, he is obviously exhausted). rub his back and turn on the white noise machine and he falls asleep (2:30 am ish). he wakes up crying again at 3:30am. im so freaking tired, i grab him out of his crib and put him in bed with me. he woke up at 6:15am for good. WTH??? I've had his ears checked, clear and no infection. I've changed his mattress (he had one with a crinkly plastic on top, and i thought that might be bothering him). Im wondering if hes hungry? hes kind of a picker at dinner. two nights ago, i gave him two jars of baby food (i had it left over from when we were using it), and whatever we were eating on his plate (he feeds himself), and he slept great..... i know that CIO is the solution for most of you, but it doesnt seem like its going to work here. him screaming and waking up the entire house doesnt help anyone. DH travels during the week, and is only home on the weekends (most weekends, some he travels internationally). so, im doing this alone... im exhausted and need some sleep (and im sure he does too!) help? thoughts???

  • Is He Teething? have you tried teething tablets or an amber teething necklace? If you think he is hungry can you try giving him a pediasure shake or a homemade shake before bed?
I have no other advise, we do CIO. Sometimes he wakes DS1 but he typicall goes right back to sleep

  • Do you guys have a solid bedtime routine? I find that helps. I also am finding that I have to adjust bedtime a bit with the seasons changing--now that it's getting darker earlier she's going to bed a bit earlier.

Generally, though, Linden is also a good sleeper, I'd say. But I really find it goes through phases and sometimes she just has an off night for whatever reason--probably some valid reason that I just don't know. I just try to go with it. Last night, for example, she woke up screaming about an hour after going down and would not settle. I think it's teeth. But anyway, she slept with us because that was just the easiest way for us all to get some rest.

I'm sorry--I realize that's not a great answer or much help, but just sharing our experience!
  • I don't have any advice because dd still gets up at least once, but sometimes tons more times. I do have sympathy though. I'll join you in the tired camp. If you come up with a solution, please share.

  • From what I've learned, the constant waking like that means he is overtired....
(Or teething or wonder week). Haha.

What time do you try a second nap? Could you try pushing bedtime earlier?

If he usually can soothe himself, he might be too tired to use those strategies effectively.

  • How long have you been doing the pedi's recommendation of going in to shush & then walking out? We did it with DS at this age & it took approximately 10 days of being consistent with it for him to start STTN. I didn't pick him up, no talking & definitely no taking him to my own bed, as tempting as it was. I'm just curious b/c you say it's not working - maybe you just haven't given it enough time.

I can sympathize though with how tough it is when one kid wakes the other up. It sucks big time.

You moved? That might be it. Marian did this exact thing when we moved, regressing because the room was unfamiliar. We put a shirt of mine and of DH's into the crib with her, white noise/glow worm, and a paci. We had to keep things as familiar as possible for her to adjust.
