My poor furbaby Update

I don't know what my dog was thinking but he jumped head first into the window. I checked him over and his mouth was bleeding. It looks like he cracked a tooth, but I'm worried about how hard he hit his head.

With the move we haven't found a vet yet. The closest vet that is taking new patients is over an hour away and doesn't have good reviews. I'm in a small town and the closest 24 hour vet us about an hour away if he needs one but I don't know if he does. Any advice? I'm almost tempted to call our old vet but they are two hours away.

Update: He has a minor concussion. He also bit his tongue and cut up his gum. We got back at like 5 in the morning, so I may go back to bed, but they made it so he could keep his tooth. They said the crack was really thin and fine. Which is good. Right now he is sleeping. Thank you ladies.

Re: My poor furbaby Update

  • If he cracked a tooth I'd want him to be seen if he was my dog. I'd go to the emergency vet and suck up the drive to avoid pestering my own vet when the answer would be "he should be seen".

  • How is he acting? Maybe call the old vet and see what they say? Maybe they can tell you things to look out for..
  • Poor little guy! Id take mine to the ER vet for a cracked tooth. That hurts :(

  • Poor pup.  Is he a squirrel chaser, maybe he jumped at something like that?  A cracked tooth DOES need a trip to the vet, but I don't know if it's an emergency appt. as long as he doesn't seem to be in pain.  I would def. get him in the very next morning, as early as possible, b/c a cracked tooth can make him stop drinking/eating.  Sorry, I don't know.  I base my emergency vet trips on how the animal is acting/pain level, but if his pupils are both even, he's responding, & he's acting like himself, I'd think you could wait until morning to take him in.  I'd probably check on him through the night, but if you think he has any real head trauma, then take him in.
  • Rondack thank you for your advice. Since H and I share a car for the moment and he is at work I just called and left him a message letting him know we need to go to the vet. You are right about the tooth I don't want it to get infected or cause him too much pain.

Tasogirl he is acting like his normal self.

Let us know how he is.

What made him do that? If you don't know, mention it, there could be a medical issue that caused him to do it... Or he could be like my dog who does dumb crap to drain my wallet. He wants the vet to have a nice car.

  • We were playing tug of war, when he barked and jumped into the window. I know some squirrels are building a nest in the tree right outside that window so I'm hoping that is the reason why.

Is it dark there? If he was wound up and playing and saw "another dog" (his reflection) that could cause it.

Yeah its dark. It's after 10 at night here. That could be it too.

  • Yep my dog occasionally barks at herself in the sliding glass door. More often she barks at "those other people" also know as me and DH walking around the house in the door reflection. Ahh dogs.

  • Poor pup - sorry he hurt himself! I hope everything is ok and please let us all know.
I will mention that if the vet doesn't mention it, and he seems uncomfortable, aspirin is safe for dogs (not Tylenol nor anything else .. Pure aspirin). Keep looking for lethargy and behavioral changes for next few days.
  • So glad you decided to take him to be seen, I hope everything is alright. Like others have said, animals don't really tell you when they're hurting. I also second the aspirin. Our vet has us use children's Bufferin.

Tell him in advance that baby will get hurt on BOTH your watches and that bullshit blaming attitude isn't okay and doesn't help.

You can't prevent all accidents, no matter how attentive you are.
