3rd Trimester

Meals after delivery!

Ok so I am in my 1st trimester however, I have had to make a meal for a friend who gave birth and need to make one for another who is giving birth very soon. I would like to make her a good meal for the whole family and also for myself when the the time is near and freeze to have almost ready and on hand but can I get some ideals on what to make and do?

Re: Meals after delivery!

  • Could you do a casserole or baked pasta dish? Also crock pot meals are great and easy.
  • Loading the player...
  • if you do pasta, use one of the brands that are a little firmer and half cook it (do not cook all the way). I personally cannot stand mushy pasta that comes from the freezer. That is me though. I know most do not see a difference.

Pasta dishes - stuffed shells, home made mac and cheese (easier than you think), lasagna, baked penne/spaghetti, chili mac, ravioli

Stuffed chicken breasts, stuffed pork, you can put it on a rice casserole. I like (and it sounds gross I know) some cheese potatoes with pork chops on top with some apples on top. It is so yummy. DH and kids love it.

Cottage (Sheppard) pie, perogies and sausage, meatloaf, chili

There are several threads all over on it.

  • Soup & chili now that the weather is starting to cool. Grab a bagged salad and some bread from the bakery and you've got a nice meal.

  • Meat loaf also freezes really well.  I brought meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and brownies to one of our neighborhood mamas after she had her baby.  It's quick and easy and tasty!

  • This might apply more to helping your friend out, as opposed to something you can make ahead and freeze but I think a lot of people forget that new mom's might like something nice for lunches and snacks.  Chicken and tuna salads can keep for a couple days, veggie plates with hummus or low cal dips for a quick snack in between sleeping and feedings.. some healthy muffins (which you could freeze), quiche cups for a quick breakfast.. just a few ideas
  • The best dish that was made for us was a rhubarb loaf and banana breads.... Best idea. Great for breakfast and snacks which if your bf is perfect because in the morning I was starving and couldn't even wait for toast!!
  • Cut fruit!!!  I was always so thirsty and in need of healthy snacks.  You can do the whole edible arrangements things (super pricey) or just get pre cut fruit at the store or do it yourself and make a fruit salad.  It is great to have on hand and something I would appreciate when I got home :)
  • after eating hospital food I was so happy to eat home made chili! that freezes awesome and reheats great too! I will be doing that myself this time around!
  • When I had DD some one brought me a sandwich tray with deli meat cheeses and rolls, it was awesome for fast snacks anytime, so now that's what I bring my new mom friends.
