Adoption

Has anyone read this book?

In perusing my library network's adoption offerings (MUCH better selection if I go outside of my local branch), I found a book called Can I Tell You About Adoption? Apparently it's told from an adopted child's POV, with input from her 2 friends who were adopted trans-racially. It looks to be part of a series covering topics from ADHD to asthma to autism. If anyone has a review, I'd love to hear it!

Re: Has anyone read this book?

  • If this is the book I'm thinking of, I didn't like it. The primary writer had a pretty negative sense of being adopted and had lots of issues coming to terms with it. I'm an adoptee and I don't believe that every adopted child has major issues because they were adopted so I'm not a big fan of the books where the writer blames all life issues on the fact that they are adopted. On top of being adopted my adoption was also a bi-racial adoption. I also don't have issues with knowing who I am or where I belong . That's just my opinion though and my adoption story. I prefer the books that focus on what is done for an adoption to be a successful blend of lives and families. Jaiya Johns has some great books he's written on adoption.

  • Too late, I ordered it. And I think it's a different book plus12012. It's written from the perspective of a 10yo girl who was adopted.

It's OK. It's written by someone in the UK, where most adoptions are through foster care, so if you're an American doing DIA it's not going to sound as relevant. It spends some time talking about the loss associated with adoption (which I actually appreciated) and addresses transracial adoption as well. It's meant for kids 8 and up.

I'm sending a copy to DD's school and a copy to our library for their adoption display next month.
