Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Up All Hours

3 month old is not sleeping through the night..... not even part. I can usually only get his last feeding (FF) in around 6-7 and then he is asleep around 8.  He wakes around midnight to eat again and then around 4. Right now he will only stay awake long enough to eat 4.5 ounce at night with some cereal mixed with formula at each feeding.

Are there any moms out there that have gone through this? Is there any hope in my very near future for sleep? Any recommendations for more night sleep?

Re: Up All Hours

  • All babies are different and some STTN earlier than others. What he's doing sounds pretty normal to me!

  • All of that sounds normal to me. My 4 month old still wakes up multiple times a night.
  • Should you be giving cereal at 3 months? My doc and WIC said not till six months but that's with breastfeeding.
  • so he's waking about every 4 hours?
  • My 3 month old does the exact same thing. Usually takes a nap at 6. Then gets his last feeding at 9 where he is out cold by the time we finish the bottle. Wakes up at 12, and 4. Exhausting, but it will all get better right?

Try keeping him awake during the feed or move the bottle to the beginning of bedtime routine, if he learns the skills to fall sleep on his own, he will be less likely to wake up unnecessarily at night
  • 2 feedings at 3 months is totally normal and I wouldn't consider that "up all hours." Why are you giving a 3 month old rice cereal though?
  • 2 wake ups is pretty common at that age still but there is hope.......after all, YOU still don't wake up in the middle of the night for food (do you??) :). Your baby will outgrow the need to eat in the middle of the night, but at this point it sounds like he is getting a full feeding so he really does need it

That all sounds normal and actually pretty good for a 3 month old. Waking twice to eat is hardly up at "all hours". Young babies are not hard wired to STTN.

Eta I just saw you put rice cereal in the bottle. That is a serious choking hazard and a bad idea that won't help with sleeping, FYI.
  • This doesn't sound bad at all. My 5m old was up....let me see--3 maybe even 4x last night and was not EAGER to go back to sleep at 4 am...ugh!!

  • well thanks to all of you supportive mothers with helpful replies. As this is my first baby.... there are some things that I don't know to be normal or not.  As I talk to friends with babies the same age, theirs are sleeping through the whole night.  I usually do not compare because I know that all babies are different. I am thankful that he does go back to sleep when he wakes to eat at night!!!

He is on a very SMALL amount of rice cereal because the pedi recommended it to help keep the formula down. Believe me- I know that it doesn't help with longer sleeping and it does not seem to be helping with the spits :(  He has not been a happy baby since the switch to formula due to medical issues I have suffered :(  I did not want to do cereal because of literature saying that most babies don't get it until 4 months or older

Thank You All for comforting words :)
  • I'm jealous of you --my 3.5 month old DS often wakes multiple times thru the night. I'd love to see him go down to only 2 x a night! Just offering some perspective. You are one of the lucky ones. :) my DD slept much better when she was this age but was not consistently STTN until 5 months. babies are different

  • OP everyone was helpful to you. sorry if you didn't feel like hearing that you are lucky and shouldn't be complaining about 2 wake ups. Sorry, but you are lucky.
